DEXA 2004 Workshop on
Supporting Imprecision and Uncertainty in
Flexible Databases (SIUFDB-04)
Zaragoza, Spain, September 3, 2004

Workshop web site: http://siufdb04.unibg.it

Aim and Scope
-------------

A more intuitive, easy and powerful representation, access, and
retrieval of information is nowadays a necessary feature of
information systems that have become a common instrument for a
wide class of users in different areas and for the most diversified
tasks.
In the last years, the management of imprecision and uncertainty in
databases has become an important research area, which has known an
impressive growth. Generally, this topic has been separately dealt
with by the soft computing community and the database community.
By the proposed workshop we intend to bring together experiences and
methods concerning the management of uncertainty and imprecision in
databases, matured and developed separately within the traditional
database community and the soft computing community. We think that
this initiative can yield a cross-fertilisation in the specific field.
The workshop is addressed to the community of researchers in databases,
IR, GIS, soft computing, knowledge representation and multimedia,
working on the extension of existing data models and query languages
or on the definition of new data models and languages with the aim of
improving the capabilities of current systems to represent and manage
uncertain and imprecise information.
Perspective solutions and practical developments are welcome, provided
that they cover both database technology and imprecision/uncertainty
management. Position papers are also welcome and encouraged.

Topics
------

The topics of the Workshop include but are not limited to the followings:

* Database models for uncertain, imprecise, incomplete and vague data
* Query languages dealing with imprecision and vagueness
* Management of imprecise and uncertain spatial and spatio-temporal data
* Data mining over uncertain data
* Flexible languages for data mining
* Data categorization and ontologies

Submission of papers
--------------------

* Papers should be original and not previously published elsewhere.
Basic, applied research and position papers are solicited.
* Papers should not exceed 5 pagers, formatted following the formatting
instructions available at http://computer.org/cspress/instruct.htm.
Papers that fail to comply to length limitations risk rejection.
* Electronic submission in PDF format is preferred, but Postscript will
also be accepted. Please note that hard copy and fax submissions will
not be accepted.
* Precise submission instructions can be found on the workshop web site.

Final Version
-------------

Papers will be published in the workshop proceedings. Papers should
not exceed 5 pagers, formatted following the formatting instructions
available at the web address http://computer.org/cspress/instruct.htm.
Successively, we plan to edit a book on "Supporting Imprecision and
Uncertainty in Flexible Databases", that will contain an extended
version of best workshop papers.
