Call for Papers ICDE/EDBT Ph.D. Workshop 2004 Heraklion, Crete, Greece, March 18, 2004 Boston, Massachusetts, USA, March 29, 2004 <http://www.cse.uconn.edu/icde04/phd/> ******************************************************* *** Please forward this call to your Ph.D. students *** ******************************************************* News: * post-workshop proceedings will be published by Springer (LNCS) * deadline for submissions is December 12, 2003 ---Introduction--- The joined ICDE/EDBT Ph.D. Workshop is intended to bring together Ph.D. students working on topics related to the ICDE as well as the EDBT conference series. The workshop will have two sessions the first in Heraklion, Greece, on March 18 and the second in Boston, USA, on March 29, 2004. The workshop will offer Ph.D. students the opportunity to present, discuss, and receive feedback on their research in a constructive and international atmosphere. Students can choose where to present their papers (Heraklion/Boston) when accepted. The workshop will be accompanied by prominent professors and researchers in the field of database technology. These accompanying professors will participate actively and contribute to the discussions. The first session is co-located with and will take place on the last day of the EDBT 2004 conference. The second session is co-located with and will take place immediately before the ICDE 2004 conference. The workshop language is English. ---Topics of Interest--- As for the ICDE and EDBT conferences series, all topics from the field of database technology are of interest for the Ph.D. Workshop. These topics include (but are not limited to): o Active Databases o Imprecise and Uncertain Information o Advanced Query Processing o Indexing, Access Methods, Data Structures and Optimization o Legacy Databases o Ambient-aware Database Applications o Logic and Databases o Approximate Queries o Mobile Computing and Databases o Authorization and Security o Multimedia Databases o Autonomic Databases o Object-Relational Database Systems o Biological Databases and o Parallel and Distributed Databases Bioinformatics o Privacy Techniques for Databases o Component-based Information Systems o Query Languages and User Interfaces o Constraint and Rule Management o Real-Time Database Systems o Data Models and Database Design o Replication, Caching, Materialized o Data Warehousing and OLAP Views o Data Mining and Knowledge o Scientific and Statistical Databases Discovery o Self-healing Databases o Database Applications and o Semi-structured Data, Metadata, and XML Experiences o Spatial and Temporal Databases o Database Performance and Benchmarks o Stream Processing, Continuous Queries, o E-Commerce, Workflow, and Databases and Sensor Databases o Federated Databases, Middleware, o Text Storage and Retrieval and Interoperability o Transactions and Recovery o Knowledge Base Management Systems o Trustworthy Databases o Geographic Information Systems o World-Wide Web and Databases ---Submission--- Papers describing doctoral work should be uploaded in pdf or postscript format at: <http://www.cse.uconn.edu/icde04/phd/> The paper length should not exceed 6 pages. When submitting your paper please indicate at which session you would like to present it by choosing Heraklion or Boston as first keyword. In contrast to regular conference papers, submissions should address specifically doctoral work! Therefore, the following elements are recommended: - A clear formulation of the research question. - An identification of the significant problems in the field of research. - An outline of the current knowledge of the problem domain, as well as the state of existing solutions. - A presentation of any preliminary ideas, the proposed approach and the results achieved so far. - A sketch of the applied research methodology. - A description of the Ph.D. project's contribution to the problem solution. - A discussion of how the suggested solution is different, new, or better as compared to existing approaches to the problem. The papers accepted at the last Ph.D. workshop were published by LNCS (2490). We hope to do so again this year. Furthermore, the abstracts will be made available on the world wide web.
