Call for Chapters - edited book on Spatial Databases: Technologies, Techniq: msg#00125db.dbworld
** Apologies for multiple postings ** Please forward this to anyone who may be interested! CALL FOR CHAPTERS ----------------- Submission Deadline: July 21, 2003 *** Spatial Databases: Technologies, Techniques and Trends *** A book edited by Yannis Manolopoulos, Apostolos Papadopoulos (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece) & Michael Vassilakopoulos (Technological Educational Institute of Thessaloniki, Greece) Introduction ------------ Modern applications are both data and computationally intensive and require the storage and manipulation of voluminous traditional (alphanumeric) and non-traditional data sets (images, text, geometric objects, time-series). Examples of such emerging application domains are: Geographical Information Systems (GIS), Multimedia Information Systems, Picture Archive and Communication Systems (PACS), CAD/CAM applications, Medical Information Systems. From the database perspective, new technologies need to be developed towards supporting these application domains. Spatial database management systems store data like points, lines, regions, volumes and aim at supporting queries that involve the space characteristics of these data. In order to handle such queries, a spatial database system is enhanced by special techniques and tools. These include new data types and models, sophisticated data structures and algorithms for efficient query processing that differ from their counterparts in a conservative alphanumeric database. When a spatial database is enhanced by temporal characteristics we get a spatio-temporal database system. In such a system, the time of insertions, deletions and updates is of great importance, since it must be able to store and manipulate the evolution of spatial objects. New algorithms and tools are needed in order to process queries that combine the spatial and temporal characteristics of the objects . The Overall Objective of the Book --------------------------------- To introduce the reader, who should have a computer science background, to this scientific area and the related sub topics and to guide him/her up to the state-of-the-art and the related current research challenges. The Target Audience ------------------- This book would be suitable for scientists who wish to know this scientific area in order to proceed to advanced applications, or to basic and/or applied research. It would be ideal for researchers from other computer science disciplines who wish to get acquainted with this area and develop new research. Recommended topics include but are not limited to the following: ---------------------------------------------------------------- Data Semantics and Models Data Types and Query Languages Management of Moving Objects Management of Raster and Vector Data Query Optimisation Techniques Query Processing and Indexing Similarity Spatial & Temporal Aspects of Mobile Computing Spatial & Temporal Data and the Web Spatial & Temporal Data Mining and Knowledge Discovery Spatial & Temporal Data Warehousing and Decision Support Systems Design of Experiments and Benchmarks Applications and Commercial Systems Parallel and Distributed Database Systems SUBMISSION PROCEDURE -------------------- Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit on or before July 21, 2003, a 2-5 page manuscript proposal clearly explaining the mission and concerns of the proposed chapter. Authors of accepted proposals will be notified by Aug. 15, 2003 about the status of their proposals and sent chapter organizational guidelines. Full chapters are expected to be submitted by October 30, 2003. All submitted chapters will be reviewed by at least two reviewers on a blind review basis. The book is scheduled to be published by Idea Group, Inc., publisher of the "Idea Group Publishing", "Information Science Publishing" and "IRM Press" imprints in 2004.
