[Post-doctoral position available]: msg#00072db.dbworld
Post-doctoral position available Research position is available in the joint 'Databases and Information Retrieval' (BaDRI-BDI) and 'ATLantic dAta Systems' (INRIA-ATLAS) research group of IRIN, Nantes (Fr). This position, funded by the 'Pays de la Loire' Regional Concil for 6 to 11 months, is: - mainly for non-french post-doctoral visitors (total grant amount for 11 months : 24,390 euros); - but also for young expatriate french researchers who would like to apply locally for an associate professor position in the near future (total grant amount for 11 months : 37,350 euros). IRIN is a large laboratory (about 100 persons) dedicated to computer science research in a broad variety of fields among which Databases and Information Retrieval, Knowledge Discovery and Representation, Constraint Solving, Bioinformatics, Natural Language Processing, Object-Oriented Modeling and Design, etc. ---- Our project: As the information stored in databases is rapidly growing, users need tools and methods for querying collections of data, analysing its content, navigating through the database as well as supporting complex decision making processes. To deal with this issue, two main research areas have raised up interest of the database community: on the one hand, the knowledge discovery in databases (KDD) is concerned with the non-trivial extraction of valid, previously unknown, potentially useful, and ultimately understandable patterns in data [Fayyad et al. 1996], by the way of an inductive learning task (data mining). On the other hand, on-line analytical processes (OLAP) provide users with integrated, synthetic and intelligible views, either materialized (data warehousing and multidimensional DB) or virtual (GaV/LaV mediator architectures), of multiple, heterogeneous and autonomous data sources. At the intersection of these two research areas, The joint BaDRI and INRIA-ATLAS research group focuses on a summarization method, so-called SaintEtiQ, providing user with self-descriptive, multidimensional and multi-level granulation views of a collection of structured data. A summary hierarchy is built from data by the way of a concept formation algorithm. Furthermore, the Zadeh's fuzzy set theory offers the theoretical background to represent summaries with fuzzy labels taken from fuzzy partitions and linguistic variables. Indeed, the well-founded symbolic/numerical interface as well as flexibility and robustness of the underlying process of summarization are some of the critical advantages of this approach. Facing the recent convergence of data and documents, especially through the XML normalization, as well as the intensive development of applications, services, and management systems dedicated to it, we are now investigating content summarization of semi-structured documents. Thus, the offered post-doctoral position is concerned with the extension of our summarization method to semi-structured data, in the general framework of XML documents over the World Wide Web. Implementation and experimentation of the proposed solutions are also expected from the applicant. ---- Requirements & preferred skills: - have recently acquired a PhD. degree; - at most 35 years old; - familiar with Databases, XML (Schema, DOM, DBMS), OLAP Techniques, Uncertain Information Management, Fuzzy Set Theory. ---- Deadline for application: May, 9 2003 ---- To apply: Candidates can send a detailed CV (with references) and obtain more informations: - by email to mouaddib-B5i9jFBDuVFL9gsp55mzlVaPQRlvutdw@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx or raschia@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx http://www.sciences.univ-nantes.fr/irin/badri.html http://www.sciences.univ-nantes.fr/irin/ATLAS/ - by postal mail to Noureddine Mouaddib IRIN 2, rue de la Houssinière BP 92208 F-44322 Nantes Cedex 3 -------------------------------------------------------------------------- To subscribe or unsubscribe yourself from dbworld, send a msg to majordomo-hcNo3dDEHLuVc3sceRu5cw@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx with one of these lines: subscribe dbworld OR unsubscribe dbworld To find out more options send a msg with the line: help To post messages, go to URL www.cs.wisc.edu/dbworld --------------------------------------------------------------------------
