------------------------------------------------------------------

Overview
--------

SBBD is the official database event of SBC - the Brazilian Computer
Society - and aims mostly at publicizing research results.
In its eighteenth edition, SBBD 2003 is expected to congregate up to
500 attendees in Manaus, a city located in the heart of the Amazon
tropical forest.

SBBD gathers researchers, students and practitioners, from
Brazil and abroad, for discussing problems related to the main topics
in modern database technologies. Besides technical sessions and tutorials,
the symposium also includes invited talks given by distinguished
speakers from the international research community. SBBD has been
organized in cooperation with ACM SIGMOD for a few years and since
last year it has been sponsored by the VLDB Endownment.

Best Paper Award
----------------

Since 1998, SBBD sponsors the Jose Mauro de Castilho (JMC) Award.
This award is given to the best paper as selected by the program
committee. Past winner papers have been published in SIGMOD Record
and in the Journal of the Brazilian Computer Society. Jose Mauro de
Castilho, who passed away in March 1998, was a professor at the
Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul where he, as one of the
database pioneers in Brazil, helped to form a full generation
of professionals and researchers in the area.

Submission Guidelines
---------------------

Submitted papers can be written in Portuguese or English.
Submission in English is strongly encouraged since this year
only papers written in English will be included in the
ACM SIGMOD DiSC (http://www.acm.org/sigmod/disclist/).
A preliminary version of the proceedings including all
accepted papers will be available for distribution to the
attendees at the symposium site. A post-symposium version
of the proceedings with selected papers from the final program
is expected to be published by a major international publisher.

Papers submitted to SBBD must not have been simultaneously submitted
to any other forum (conference or journal), nor should they have
already been published elsewhere. The acceptance of a paper implies
that at least one of its authors will register for the symposium to
present it. Submitted papers will be reviewed based on originality,
relevance, technical soundness and clarity of presentation.

Papers must be submitted electronically, by May 5th, 2003,
through the link available at the symposium Web page (or using
directly the page at http://www.lbd.dcc.ufmg.br/sbbd2003).
Before submitting a paper, and no later than April 30th, 2003,
authors must register its title, list of authors and abstract
using the same Web page.

Submitted papers must not exceed 15 pages with font size 12pt, 1.5 line
space, and single column. Papers exceding this limit will be automatically
rejected without being reviewed by the Program Committee. In addition,
papers must be submitted in PDF format. Formats other than PDF will NOT
be accepted. However, exceptionally and upon request, generic postscript
might be accepted.

For further inquires, please contact the Program Committee Chair at the
email below.

Symposium Venue
---------------

The symposium will be held in the city of Manaus, capital of the State
of Amazonas, in the northern region of Brazil. Located in the heart of
the Amazon tropical forest, at the confluence of the Amazon and the
Negro rivers, Manaus is a well-known destination for ecotourism due to
its unique and beatful natural resources, folklore and a cuisine full
of delicious regional flavors. Manaus can be reached by direct flights
from major Brazilian cities such as Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and the
capital Brazilia. There are also direct flights from Miami that operate
almost daily.

Imagining Manaus as an ordinary city is just unfair. Set in the middle
of the planet's largest tropical forest, Manaus is surrounded by an
amazing inventory of natural resources, represented by 20% of all the
world's fresh water, a genetic bank of inestimable value, and large ore,
gas and petroleum deposits. The importance of the region is immeasurable.

In Manaus, ecotourism plays a crucial role, signaling new inroads towards
the development of Brazil's largest green area. Manaus is located right
in the middle an environmental treasure, hosting and fostering
exemplary environmental preservation initiatives such as the Ducke
Reserve, the largest botanical garden in the world, along other six
environmental parks. Moreover, there nature and technology live
together in harmony. Side by side with the exuberance offered by nature,
grows a modern industrial park with more than 600 companies whose cutting
edge technology is comparable to the most advanced production centers in
the world.

The region time zone has one hour less than Brazil's capital Brasilia
and four hours less than GMT. The climate is classified as being humid
equatorial, with an average annual temperature of 90oF and a relative
air humidity around 80%. Data from the last national census in 2000
indicates a population of 1,403,796 inhabitants. More information about
Manaus and its surroundings can be found at http://www.manaustur.com.br.

The symposium site is the the Studio5 Convention Center, a modern and
fully climatized conference complex, located near to the industrial
park of Manaus and not far from the campus of the Federal University of
Amazonas and the Amazon National Research Institute, and just 10 minutes
away from downtown Manaus. The Novotel Manaus and the Ibis Hotel Manaus
are also located close to the Studio5 Convention Center.
