10th SPIRE (String Proc & Inf. Retrieval): msg#00133db.dbworld
------------------------------------------------------------------------ CALL FOR PAPERS SPIRE 2003 - 10th International Symposium on String Processing and Information Retrieval http://database.cs.ualberta.ca/spire03/ http://acai.ppgi.fua.br/spire03 October 08-10, Manaus - Brazil ------------------------------------------------------------------------ The SPIRE 2003 Symposium SPIRE 2003 is the tenth edition of the International Symposium on String Processing and Information Retrieval. It has its origins in the South American Workshop on String Processing which was first held in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, in 1993. Starting in 1998, the focus of the symposium was broadened to include the area of information retrieval due to its increasing relevance and its inter-relationship with the area of string processing. The scope of the symposium includes not only string processing and information retrieval in general, but also contributions in different application areas like biocomputing, DNA sequencing, WWW based IR systems and IR related languages like SGML and XML. Given its inter-disciplinarity, it offers a singular opportunity for researchers interested in working in these areas. Some recent SPIRE editions (along with pointers to their proceedings): * 9th SPIRE - Lisbon, Portugal. September 2002 (Proceedings at Springer-Verlag's site). * 8th SPIRE - Laguna San Rafael, Chile. November 2001 (Proceedings at IEEE CS's site). * 7th SPIRE - A Coruña, Spain. September 2000 (Proceedings at IEEE CS's site). * 6th SPIRE - Cancun, Mexico. September 1999 (Proceedings at IEEE CS's site). Invited Talks (confirmed) * Finding Patterns on the Web by Krishna Bharat (Google, Inc.), and * Current Challenges in Bioinformatics by Joao Meidanis, State Univ. of Campinas and Scylla Bioinformatics. Symposium Venue The symposium will take place in Manaus, a city that lies at the confluence of the Amazon and the Negro rivers and is located in the heart of the Amazon rain forest - hence offering innumerous opportunities for ecotourism. Manaus is known by its unique and beautiful natural resources, folklore, and by a cuisine full of delicious regional flavors. Besides the natural attractives, Manaus is also an industrial city that has roughly 1.3 million inhabitants and presents a complete infra-structure for tourists and business visitors. SPIRE'03 will be co-located with the 18th edition of the Brazilian Symposium on Databases, which should attract more than 500 attendees. Important Dates: * Abstract submission: April 21st, 2003 (open) * Paper submission: April 28th, 2003 * Authors notification: June 16th, 2003 * Camera ready: July 16th, 2003 Topics SPIRE 2003 covers research in all aspects of string processing, information retrieval, computational biology, pattern matching, DNA computing, and related applications. Typical topics of interest include (but are not limited to): * String Processing: dictionary algorithms, text searching, pattern matching, text compression, text mining, voice or natural language processing, and automata based string processing. * Information Retrieval (IR): IR modeling, indexing, ranking and filtering, interface design, visualization, cross-lingual IR systems, multimedia IR, digital libraries, collaborative retrieval, and Web applications. * Interaction of biology and computation: DNA sequencing and applications in molecular biology, information encoding for DNA computing, evolution and phylogenetics, recognition of genes and regulatory elements, protein structure prediction. * Information Retrieval languages and applications: XML, SGML, information retrieval from semi-strutured data, text mining and generation of structured data from text. Organization: * General Chair: Edleno Silva de Moura, UFAM - Brazil. * Program Committee Chair: Mario A. Nascimento, Univ. of Alberta - Canada. * Publications Chair: Arlindo Oliveira, Inesc - Portugal. * Local Arrangements Co-Chairs: Altigran Soares da Silva, and Tanara Lauschner UFAM - Brazil. * Program Committee: o Alberto Apostolico (Purdue Univ., USA) o Ricardo Baeza-Yates (Universidad de Chile) o Michael Benedikt (Bell Labs, USA) o Elisa Bertino (Univ. of Milan, Italy) o Nieves Brisaboa (Universidad de A Coruna, Spain) o Edgar Chavez (Universidad Michoacana, Mexico) o Roger Chiang (Univ. of Cincinnati, USA) o Stavros Christodoulakis (Technical University of Crete) o Maxime Crochemore (Universite de Marne-la-Vallée, France) o Bruce Croft (Univ. of Massachusetts, USA) o Edward Fox (Virginia Tech, USA) o Juliana Freire (Oregon Graduate Institute, USA) o Ophir Frieder (Illinois Institute of Technology, USA) o Pablo de La Fuente (Univ. of Valladolid) o Norbert Fuhr (Univ. of Duisburg, Germany) o Gaston Gonnet (ETH Zurich, Switzerland) o David Grossman (Illinois Institute of Technology, USA) o David Hawking (Australian National Univ.) o Carlos Alberto Heuser (UFRGS, Brazil) o Thomas Roelleke (Queen Mary Univ. of London, UK) o Costas Iliopoulos (King's College London, UK) o Alberto Laender (Federal Univ. of Minas Gerais, Brazil) o Ee-Peng Lim (Nanyang Technological Univ., Singapore) o Dekang Lin (Univ. of Alberta, Canada) o Joel Martin (National Research Council Canada) o Joao Meidanis (Univ. of Campinas, Brazil) o Massimo Melucci (Univ. of Padova, Italy) o Alistair Moffat (Univ. of Melbourne, Australia) o Gonzalo Navarro (Universidad de Chile, Chile) o Charles Nicholas (Univ. Authors should understand that, upon recommendation by the Program Committee, a few papers may be accepted as short papers, nevertheless all submissions will be initially considered as full papers. Submission of a paper implies that, in case of its acceptance, at least of the authors will register at the Symposium as well as present it on-site. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------------------------------- To subscribe or unsubscribe yourself from dbworld, send a msg to majordomo-hcNo3dDEHLuVc3sceRu5cw@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx with one of these lines: subscribe dbworld OR unsubscribe dbworld To find out more options send a msg with the line: help To post messages, go to URL www.cs.wisc.edu/dbworld --------------------------------------------------------------------------
