Call for Tutorials SBBD 2003: msg#00095db.dbworld
================================================================ SBBD 2003 - Call for Tutorials ** DEADLINE: June 2, 2003 ** XVIII Brazilian Symposium on Databases - SBBD 2003 Promoted by SBC, Brazilian Computer Society In cooperation with ACM SIGMOD and sponsored by the VLDB Endowment Manaus, Amazonas, Brazil October 6-8, 2003 http://sbbd.fua.br ======================================================= SBBD is the official database event of SBC - the Brazilian Computer Society - and aims mostly at publicizing research results. In its eighteenth edition, SBBD 2003 is expected to congregate up to 500 attendees in Manaus, a city located in the heart of the Amazon tropical forest. SBBD gathers researchers, students and practitioners, from Brazil and abroad, for discussing problems related to the main topics in modern database technologies. Besides technical sessions and tutorials, the symposium also includes invited talks given by distinguished speakers from the international research community. SBBD has been organized in cooperation with ACM SIGMOD for the past few years and since last year it has been sponsored by the VLDB Endowment. SBBD 2003 invites submissions of tutorial proposals. Each tutorial will be presented in a 3 hours session. Only an abstract (1-2 pages) of the accepted tutorials will be published in the symposium proceedings. However, copies of the presentation slides will be also required for distribution at the symposium. We will consider proposals for introductory and advanced tutorials on any topic within the area of databases. Introductory tutorials should target an audience consisting of advanced undergraduate and graduate students, as well as people from industry. Hence, they can be thought of as "recycling" courses. Advanced tutorials, on the other hand, must cover a broad state of the art (addressing the work of the leading research groups) besides motivating and exposing potential research issues. IMPORTANT DATES Tutorial submission: June 2nd, 2003 Notification of acceptance: June 27th, 2003 Abstracts (SBBD proceedings): July 21st, 2003 Presentation material (web site): August 18th, 2003 SBBD 2003 starts: October 6th, 2003 INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS All proposals MUST include the following items: 1. Tutorial title, authors' name, affiliation, e-mail and URL. 2. Type (introductory or advanced), language to be presented (English or Portuguese) and a short abstract stating its main goal [1 paragraph max.]. 3. Special audio-visual needs (e.g. overhead or multimedia projector). 4. Outline of the tutorial, including section titles and their respective descriptions [at most 1 paragraph for each section]. 5. List of related references [1 page max.]. 6. Where this tutorial has been presented before (or is under consideration for presentation), if applicable. [1 page max.] 7. A short bio of each author [1 paragraph max. for each author]. Please do not include any other information than those listed above. Tutorial proposals may be written in english or portuguese and should be submitted by e-mail (mail body or attachement) to the SBBD 2003 Tutorials chair: sergio-li7KwKlimkl+qlEG3opDlA@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx SBBD 2003 ORGANIZATION Steering Committee: + Karin Becker, PUCRS + Alberto Laender, UFMG + Sérgio Lifschitz, PUC-Rio + Marta Mattoso, COPPE/UFRJ + Ana Carolina Salgado, UFPE Tutorials Committee: + Claudia Bauzer Medeiros, UNICAMP + Mauro Biajiz, UFSCAR + Nina Edelweiss, UFRGS + Sérgio Lifschitz, PUC-Rio (Chair) + Fabio Andre Machado Porto, IME-RJ and PUC-Rio SYMPOSIUM VENUE The symposium will be held in the city of Manaus, capital of the State of Amazonas, in the northern region of Brazil. Located in the heart of the Amazon tropical forest, at the confluence of the Amazon and the Negro rivers, Manaus is a well-known destination for ecotourism due to its unique and beautiful natural resources, folklore and a cuisine full of delicious regional flavors. Manaus can be reached by direct flights from major Brazilian cities such as Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo and the capital Brasilia. There are also direct flights from Miami that operate almost daily. Imagining Manaus as an ordinary city is just unfair. Set in the middle of the planet's largest tropical forest, Manaus is surrounded by an amazing inventory of natural resources, represented by 20% of all the world's fresh water, a genetic bank of inestimable value, and large ore, gas and petroleum deposits. The importance of the region is immeasurable. In Manaus, ecotourism plays a crucial role, signaling new inroads towards the development of Brazil's largest green area. Manaus is located right in the middle an environmental treasure, hosting and fostering exemplary environmental preservation initiatives such as the Ducke Reserve, the largest botanical garden in the world, along other six environmental parks. Moreover, there nature and technology live there in harmony. Side by side with the exuberance offered by nature, grows a modern industrial park with more than 600 companies whose cutting edge technology is comparable to the most advanced production centers in the world. The region time zone has one hour less than Brasilia and corresponds to GMT-4. The climate is classified as being humid equatorial, with an average annual temperature of 90oF and a relative air humidity around 80%. Data from the last national census in 2000 indicates a population of 1,403,796 inhabitants. More information about Manaus and its surroundings can be found at http://www.manaustur.com.br. The symposium site is the Studio5 Convention Center, a modern and fully acclimatized conference complex, located near to the industrial park of Manaus and not far from the campus of the Federal University of Amazonas and the Amazon National Research Institute, and just 10 minutes away from downtown Manaus. The Novotel Manaus and the Ibis Hotel Manaus are also located close to the Studio5 Convention Center. DISCLAIMER Depending on funding availability, SBBD 2003 will cover travel and lodging expenses for one author per accepted tutorial (the most senior researcher in case of tutorials with more than one author). The presenting author will be required to register for the symposium. We reserve the right to refuse all of the submitted tutorial proposals, as well as to include invited tutorial presentations.
