3rd Annual Family History Technology Workshop Call for Papers The workshop spans all areas of computer science research (database systems, artificial intelligence, image processing, ...) that can collectively help resolve a single problem -- computer support for family history and genealogy. SCOPE OF THE CONFERENCE This conference provides a forum for presenting and discussing current and emerging research work on technology that support family history and genealogy. Results should address technology problems whose solutions have the potential to improve family-history and genealogical research work. The format of the conference will include a keynote speaker, panel discussions and demonstrations as well as technical presentations. WHO SHOULD ATTEND We invite all who enjoy presenting and learning about emerging technological research, as it applies to genealogy. We especially invite those who do research and publish in the areas of informatics and computer science. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TOPICS OF INTEREST The workshop focuses on research issues in technology that support family history and genealogy. We solicit submission of original research, as well as demos and experience papers that address these themes. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: Digitized Images of Historical Data - Digital Photography - Scanning Technology - Image Enhancement - Record Construction - Element Classification - Segmentation - Handwriting Recognition - OCR for Old Type-Set Text - Handwritten Extraction from Forms Digital Historical Data Sources - Extraction from Semi-structured and Unstructured Sources - Mapping between Heterogeneous Structured Views - Recognizing and Updating Legacy Data - XML for Historical Data Information Integration - Value Normalization - Integrating Legacy Data - Object Identity - Merging Extracted Data - User-Friendly Meta-Model Editing - Definition of Ontological Expectations - Managing Uncertainty - Peer-to-Peer Information Sharing Human Interfaces/Delivery Systems - Indexing Original Source Information - Storage of Large Volumes of Data - Human-Computer Interfaces - Workflow for Directing Patron Efforts - Notification Systems - Distributed Storage - Just-in-Time Browsing - Visualization Expert and Intelligent Systems - Speech/Interfaces - Machine Learning - Automated Guidance - Pattern Matching - Data Clustering ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- IMPORTANT DATES Extended Abstracts Due : February 28, 2003 Notification of Acceptance : March 14, 2003 Revised Extended Abstracts : March 21, 2003 Advanced Registration : March 21, 2003 Workshop : April 3, 2003 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- HOW TO SUBMIT Authors should submit extended abstracts via the workshop's web site, in the form of PostScript or PDF files (contact Scott Woodfield, the workshop Webmaster at woodfiel-LBaQsqPCPro3uPMLIKxrzw@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx if you need assistance). Extended abstracts should range from about seven hundred to one thousand words in length and may not exceed two thousand words.
