"...Sometimes, the best bike path is not marked as such. In Victoria,
B.C.
Haultain St. parallels a major artery one block away, but is so narrow
that
cars have to pull into the parking lanes to let each other by. A trike
can
maintain full speed, the stops signs are a reasonable distance apart,
and, a
short block from a traffic light, there are usually gaps to slip through
quickly. When I bragged about this to a friend, he showed me an
interesting
ride through the next neighborhood almost diagonally to the street grid,
using alleys and parks etc.

Vancouver BC is good about having similar (but marked) bike routes on
streets that parallel the busier streets. Most are shared with cars, but
often have "traffic calming" features like mini-roundabouts to slow
them. We still have to pedal defensively, but it sure beats riding in
heavy traffic.
Surprisingly, one of the major routes in greater Vancouver - the "7-11
trail" that parallels the skytrain to New Westminster - is NOT
trike/bike-friendly in several places: poor route marking and
surprise-curb dropoffs happen just often enough to spoil an otherwise
nice ride.

While on the subject: can anyone tell me if it's practical to ride a
trike over the Second Narrows bridge? Are the sidewalks wide enough to
pass an upright or pedestrian?
