Subject: Re: SRAM Dualdrive and Schlumpf Mountain-drive...

I run this configuration. It has been working fine for a year and a half and
around 3,000 miles. It's a 3 x 9 DualDrive. A single 48-tooth front chain
ring and 12-21 rear cassette yield 13 - 104 gear inches.

I must confess I rarely use the Schlumpf in low range. On a self-contained
tour of southern Utah this summer I was unable to use it because it was
slipping in the bottom bracket, and surprisingly didn't miss it much. My
low without the Schlumpf is 32 gear inches-- with grades in the
double-digits I was slogging pretty badly but managed just fine. I've also
done quite a bit of commuting and touring in the Boise area pulling my
daughter without using the Schlumpf's low range. The worst hills here I can
tackle without the Schlumpf or with my daughter, but not both at the same
time.

I love my DualDrive and the single front chain ring. The DualDrive is
particularly good for commuting-- good spacing for quick acceleration and
nice to be able to shift while stopped at a light. I'm not a big fan of the
MountainDrive-- way expensive, heavy, constantly seeping oil, and useless
for commuting. I think for the next iteration of my trike I'll go with wide
spacing in the rear cluster (11-32) and eliminate the Schlumpf. This should
give me something like 18 - 104 gear inches while retaining the single front
chain ring. I won't like losing the close spacing in the rear but I think
it will be a good tradeoff.

If you need the range and have the money, though, the Schlumpf is a fine
choice.

Hello!

Does anyone have experience of or know if it's
possible to combine SRAM Dualdrive and Schlumpf
Mountain-drive?
