Subject: Re: Signaling To Pass

I ride my trike on hike and bike trails in Austin and
other areas. Approaching from the rear, my approach
has been to shout "Big bike coming up on left" and
that seems to work. Sometimes, I say "big fat guy
passing on left" and that attempt at humor often falls
flat, but folks do move over. I think if I used a
Zound or other air horn, I would really tick off the
walkers, joggers and people with dogs on leash.
I have used a bell, but it sounds too passive.
My biggest issues are:

People with headsets on playing their music so loud
that they do not hear me or anything else. I just have
to wait for an opening to pass.

People two or three abreast who think they own the
trail. I really yell LOUD.... "Passing Left" and they
take umbrudge, but so be it. Obnoxious behavior is its
own reward.

I always say "Thank You" as I pass even if the people
do not move over.

Luckily, I do not often ride in high density trails.

The worst offenders are those approaching head on and
they see me or other riders coming and, for their own
selfish or stupid reasons, they refuse to allow
room...until the last possible minute. I sometimes
pass with one wheel of the trike off the trail.
Hopefully not into poison ivy.
