"JOHN THE BAPTIST, THE ARYAN SUN-FIRE PRIEST."

[Please excuse the language of the time & place (i.e. early 20th
Century Britain). We are not interested in Aryan superiority, so-
called. We are interested in Sumerian survivals. After devoting
several pages to descriptions of the Bel-Fires in Northern Europe,
Waddell turns to the subject of John the Baptist, and there are a
few things of importance in the narrative, concerning our Thesis.]

"In the Christian period, this pagan Bel-Fire festival of the Summer
Solstice was early adjusted to Christianity by the Roman Church, for
proselytizing purposes, making St. John the Baptist ~~ who, we shall
see, is represented in art as carrying the Fire Cross, whose
priestly father offered simple fire-incense offerings in the temple
(Luke 1:9), and who 'came to bear witness of THE LIGHT' (John 1:7)
~~ the patron saint of the old pagan Bel-Fire festival and
transferred the Bel-fire activities to the eve of St. John's Day,
the 24th of June, when they are still, or were until lately,
celebrated in many parts of England, as well as in Brittany and
Spain, also former colonies of the Phoenicians.

"This fact of the association of the Bel-fire rites with John the
Baptist suggests that the latter, who bears an Aryan Gentile and non-
Hebrew name, was himself an Aryan Gentile and of the Fire-cross
cult; and this seems supported by many other facts, presuming Gothic
affinity, which require mention here. His initiatory rite of baptism
is wholly unknown in Judaism,(1)whereas it is a part of the ancient
ritual of the Sumerian and Aryan Vedic and Eddic Gothic Sun-Cult,
wherein Baptism is called by the Goths SKIRI (or the 'Scouring')
which is radically identical with the name 'Sakhar' applied to it by
the Sumerians.(2) [Wad. Note: The founder of the First Sumerian
Dynasty about 3100 B.C., who uses the Swastika and figures himself
as a Fire-Priest, often regards his presentation of a 'font pan'
or 'font of the Abyss' [ABZU-BANDA], [cf. The bowl used in The
Necronomicon, the AGA - MASS - SARRATU, and GIBIL, in the
Conjuration of the Fire-God.] to different temples which he erected.
Sargon I, about 2800 B.C., as high-priest who uses the Swastika,
describes himself as "water - libator" and devotes NU-IZ-SIR
(= 'NAZIR') of God~~ 'the Sakhar [or Baptist] Lord.' And John-the-
Baptist was also a 'Nazir' or consecrated devotee [Luke 1:15, and
cf. Num. 6:2f.](3) And John-the Baptist is called 'Skiri-Jon' by the
Christian Goths of Iceland and Scandinavia; and 'Purification by
Water' day was officially called in Scotland, down to the reign of
James VI, 'Skiri - Thurisday'.(4) Moreover, the father of John the
Baptist was a Fire-Priest (he offered simple fire incense in the
temple 'in the course of ABIA'(Luke 1:15.) AB, the 5th Month of the
Syrio - Chaldean calendar, was devoted to the worship of Bel the
Fire-God, and was called by the Sumerians 'Month of Bil, or Gibil',
or 'month of making Bil-Fire'.)(5), and presumably a Gentile, and
his name 'Zacharias', which has no meaning in Hebrew, is apparently
the Sumer title of Sakhar 'Baptist', with the personal affix AS
or 'one', corresponding to the English '-ist'.

"The presence of Gentile Sun-Priests in the temple on Mt. Moriah at
Jerusalem is explained by the fact that, besides the name 'Moriah'
~~ which is recognized as meaning 'Mount of the Morias or Amorites'
~~ that temple, long before the occupation of Jerusalem by David and
its re-building by Solomon, was a famous ancient Sun-Temple of the
Hittites or Morites. Ezekiel says, 'Jerusalem, thy father was an
Amorite, and thy mother an Hittite' (Ezek. 16:3 and 45). And
Jerusalem, the 'IRUSLM' of the Hebrews, was already 'a holy city'
under that non-Hebrew name, and called by its Hittite King about
1375 B.C. (i.e., over three centuries before the time of David), in
his still existing original official letters, 'the city of the Land
of URUSALIM, the CITY OF THE TEMPLE OF THE SUN-GOD NIN-IB-US-U'
(Amarna Letters found in Akhnaten's archives.) ~~ where in the
latter part of the name (IB-U-SU) appears now to disclose the title
of the pre-Israelite inhabitants of Jerusalem, the 'IBUS' of the Old
Testament Hebrew, the 'Jebus-ites' of our English translation.
(Similarly in the other Amarna reference to this temple, the word
read 'Nin-Ib'(6) is followed by 'BUZ'. 'IB' and 'NIN-IB' are defined
as the Sun-God URAS. 'IB' also means 'enclosure,' 'temple',
and 'seer' or 'priest'. IB-U-SU thus would mean 'Temple Priest of
Winged Sun.' 'IB-US' is also defined as IB 'thresher of corn' and
the Jebusite King had his threshing floor on Mt. Moriah (2 Sam
24:16, etc.). The Hittite (or Jebusite) King of Jerusalem, who is
regarded as a kinsman of the Aryan Kassi princes of Babylonia,
(Kassi princes were staying with him and he defended them.) bore the
Gentile name of ERIKHI or URUKHI-MA, disclosed as Sumer source of
Greek 'Eros, Sanskrit and Latin VIR, Gothic VER, Anglo-Saxon WERE
and English 'Hero',) and was obviously a Sun-Fire worshipper. In his
official letters to Akhnaten, to whom he was at the time tributary,
he addressed that Sun-Worshipping Pharaoh, who, it will be
remembered, called himself 'son of the Sun' as 'My Sun, the great
Bil-Fire Torch.'

"The Israelite occupation of the Sun-Temple and its court on Mt.
Moriah,(7) from about 1012 B.C. onwards, was evidently only a joint
one, shared with the Jebusites, Hittites and Amorites of Palestine
and their descendants.(8) Shortly before his death about 1015 B.C.,
King David, we are told, purchased from the Jebusite king of
Jerusalem, Araunah(whose name is in series with that of Urukhi
and 'Uriah the Hittite'), a site on 'the threshing place' of that
king, 'where the angel of the Lord was,' in order to build there an
altar. (2 Sam 24:16-24. The Revised Version translates the text
literally as 'all this did Araunah the king give unto the king.')
That spot was thus outside the Jebusite temple itself, as
sacrificial altars were in the open air. It is noteworthy that 'the
angel of the Lord' was already there before David obtained a part of
the site; for it is significant that the 'Sun-God' Nin-Ib, is
otherwise styled 'Tás', i.e., the Hitto-Sumerian archangel of God
and the 'Tascia' of the Briton coins and monuments, as we have seen.
We thus have confirmation through the Old Testament tradition of the
existence of this pre-Israelitic Temple Aryan Archangel of God on
Mt. Moriah, as recorded in the original contemporary letters of its
pre-Israelitic king. And David's great fear of that angel (1 Chr.
20:15-30,) is explained by the latter being the Hittite tutelary of
Jerusalem and Palestine which David had invaded.

"The Temple which Solomon began to build on Mt. Moriah about 1012
B.C., and which was built mainly through the agency of Phoenicians
from Tyre, was presumably merely the rebuilding of the old Hittite
Bil or Bel Shrine, and continued to be shared by the Jebusites, of
whom we are informed that 'the children of Judah could not drive
them out but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Judah at
Jerusalem unto this day' (Josh. 15:63; Judg.. 1:21) ~~ i.e., until
the date of compiling the Old Testament, about the 6th Century B.C.

"The Solomon Temple had for its porch the characteristic Phoenician
pillars of the Bel Sun Temple, it was consecrated by 'Fire from
Heaven,' (2 Chr. 8:1), it contained images of the Sun, (2 Chr. 14:5;
34:4, 7; Revised Version), and of Sun-Horses (2 K 23:11), and it and
its court continued to be used, more or less, for Sun and Bel
worship down to the period of its destruction about 580 B.C.

"[Solomon worshipped 'BAAL' (1 K 11:5) as well as IAHVH ~~
and 'Baal' is used in the Old Testament occasionally as a title of
IAHVH or JEHOVAH (Hosea 2:16; Jer. 31, 32.) He set in the porch the
two colossal pillars of the Phoenician Bel Temples under their
Phoenician names, and supposed to represent the Phoenician Deity (1
K 7:21. These two pillars are described by Herodotus, II.44. They
bore the Phoenician names of 'Buz-Iakin' [Boaz-Jachin]. About this
time 'the children of Israel served Baal;' (Judg. 2:11-13) and fifty
years later a successor, Ahab, 'served Baal and worshipped him' (1 K
16:31), so that there were only 'seven thousand in Israel, all the
knees of which have not bowed unto Baal.' (1 K 19:18). Twenty years
later, Ahaz, with his High-Priest Urijah, placed an altar of Baal of
Phoenician pattern in the temple and erected 'Baal altars in every
corner of Jerusalem' (2 Chr. 28:24; 2 K. 16). Two centuries later,
Manasseh placed Baal altars and vessels for Baal worship inside the
Temple; (2 Chr. 33:3; 2 K 21:3; 23:4); and Bel and Sun-worship were
still practised in the Temple and its courts about the time of its
destruction by Nebuchadnezzar, about 580 B.C., as recorded by
Ezekiel.]

"The Sun-Worship in the temple, as described by Ezekiel, is
especially significant. He refers to a non-Judaist image at 'the
door of the gate of the inner court where was the seat of the image
which provokest to jealousy' (Ezek. 8:3, etc),(9) and he calls it by
the name used by the later Phoenicians for their image of Melqart
and Reshef (Tasia) [This 'Salmu', properly Sumerian 'Salam', is
especially applied to Sun-God.](10) He further says: 'In the Inner
Court of the Lord's House, at the door of the Temple of the Lord,
between the porch and the altar, were about five and twenty men with
their backs to the temple of the Lord and their faces to the east
and they worshipped the sun towards the east' (Ezek. 8:16). (See
footnote 10 below.) And here it is important to note that the sacred
place of the Sun-worshippers was in the court inside the porch, on
the flat top of the sacred mount of their ancestors, and outside the
Jewish sanctuary containing the tabernacle and ark, which for them
was defiled by its bloodshed meat offerings.

"Similarly, in the New Temple, rebuilt by the Sun-worshipping Cyrus
the Medo-Persian, as 'the house of the God of Heaven,' and begun
about 535 B.C. (Ezra 1:2, etc.; 6:4, etc.) ~~ for which services he
was affiliated to IAHVH as 'the Messiah' or 'the Lord's Anointed'
(Is. 45; and cf. 44:28.) ~~ Bel Worship appears also to have been
practiced, more or less (Ezra 9:1, etc.) about 450 B.C. (Hosea 2:16,
etc., 14:3; and later books Amos to Malachi.) Antiochus I, about 250
B.C., set up an altar to Jupiter (1 Macc.1:23, etc., and Josephus,
ANT. 12:7:6.)(11) And significantly in Herod's new Temple, which was
still in course of building when Christ began his ministry (John
2:20. It was not completed till 62-64 A.D.), there was an outer
court inside the walls of the 'temple' enclosure, called 'the
Gentile's Court,' thus recognizing the right of access for Gentiles
(fire worshippers?) to a part of the Summit of the Sacred Mount of
their Aryan ancestors. This Outer Court was presumably the part of
the 'Temple' in which the father of John the Baptist performed
his 'course of Abia,' and the part frequented by Christ.

"The word 'temple' in our English translation of the Bible is used
in different senses, and for different words.(12) It is used for the
Hebrew words for 'Palace,' 'the House,' 'House of God or of Iahvh,'
which variously designated the smallish building in the centre of
the great court, enshrining the ark in a dark chamber, surrounded by
cells for offices,(13) the storage of vessels, furniture and
treasures. It was not a place of worship, in the sense of a meeting-
house for worshippers. 'The small size of the Temple proper is
accounted for by the fact that the worshippers remained outside, the
priests only went within.' (Cambridge Companion to the Bible, 153.)
The altars were in the court in the open air. 'In this greater outer
court the prophets generally addressed the people, as also did our
Lord on many occasions; and even this court is termed "The House of
the Lord," and is "The Temple" in the New Testament.' (S. Lee,
Hebrew Lexicon, 636, cf. Jer. 26:2 and 2 K 11:13.). It must
certainly have been this outer court of 'the Temple' which Christ
called 'My Father's House,' from whence he drove out 'the sheep and
the oxen, and he poured out the changer's money, and overthrew their
tables' (John 2:14-15. The word used in the Greek text here,
translated 'temple,' is 'IERON, i.e., 'holy or sacred thing,'(14)
and is seldom used for a temple building (cf. Liddell & Scott, 727);
whereas in verses 19-20 the word for 'temple' is NAÔS, the classic
word for a temple 'building.'); for neither religiously nor
philosophically could these have been within the temple-house
proper. It was 'in the presence of all his people in the courts of
the Lord's house' that David paid his vows (Ps. 116:19): 'For a day
in Thy Courts is better than a thousand' (Ps. 84:10). And it is to
be noted that the gateway on the North side, i.e., where the non-
Judaist Phoenician 'image of jealousy' was formerly located ~~ was
called 'the Gate of Sparks,' and it had an upper chamber. This was
possibly where the father of John the Baptist performed his fire-
offering course in 'the Month of making Bel-Fire'; and the simple
burning of incense is repeatedly referred to in the O.T. as the
usual form of Bel-Worship.(15)

"The Cross-sceptre or staff traditionally carried by John the
Baptist was also an especial emblem of the 'Sun-God' Nin-Ib of
Jerusalem. As 'son of God' that 'Sun-god' is given in the Sumerian
the synonym of 'God of the Cross X' wherein that cross in the form
of St. George's Red Cross is defined as 'Wood-Sceptre,' also 'Fire'
and 'Fire-God' under the name of BAR or MAS (i.e., the English 'Bar'
and 'Mace',) [BAR == GI.BIL. or 'Great Fire God'; also BARU,(16) a
priest, thus defining the Sumerian Priest as 'the Carrier of the Bar
or Wood-Cross.'] There were thus very real, although forgotten,
historical reasons for the crusaders seeing visions of st. George's
red cross upon the battlements of JERUSALEM beckoning them on to
rescue this old ancestral Aryan shrine from the Saracens. Indeed, it
now appears as if the numerous commands by Christ to his hearers and
disciples, each to 'take up his Cross and follow Me' (Matt. 16:24,
etc. The word used here for cross is STAUROS(17); usually employed
in Classic Greek for a stave, or wooden bolt, cognate with Gothic
STAFR, or staff; Sanskrit STAVARA, 'firm.'(18) It seems cognate with
the Akkad word for this X Sign, SADADU, defined as 'the Wood of the
Winged God, the Light Red Cross.') Were references to the visible,
Fiery Red Cross sceptre-symbol of the Sun-Cult of the One Father God
of the Hittite temple of Jerusalem, the symbol carried by John the
Baptist who baptized Christ, and not an anticipation of the CRUCIFIX
(the same Greek word STAUROS is used for the Crucifix in the New
Testament.). And Christ baptized 'with Fire.' (Matt. 3:11.)

"This now suggests that not only the Cross-carrying John the Baptist
and his father, the Fire-priest Zacharias, but also Christ of
Galilee of the Gentiles, were Gentiles of the Aryan religion of the
One and Only Father-God with his symbol of the Sun-Cross, and its
associated rite of Baptism, and whose ancient Aryan shrine was at
Jerusalem. This appears to explain the anti-Judaist teaching of
Christ and John the Baptist, and why Christ and the father of John,
as well as his earlier priestly namesake, were slain by the Jewish
priests (Matt. 23:25; 2 Chr. 24:20).(19) It also seems to explain
the visit of 'the wise men from the East' to Jerusalem, at the
Nativity of our Lord. The persons generally called 'wise men from
the East' were, we find, as corrected in the Revised Version of the
New Testament, 'MAGI' (Matt 2:1), a term solely used for the priests
of the Sun and Fire cult; and this name is obviously derived from
the Sumerian MA, as 'bearer of the Ma or W Cross.' Moreover, the
related words translated in our English version 'from the East'
occur in the original Greek text as 'from ANATOLIA' ( (ARO ANATOLON.
Yet Anatol, literally 'Rising Up,' especially of Sun, is used
sometimes poetically for 'East'.) ~~ Anatolia being the middle part
of Asia Minor, including Cappadocia, the old homeland of the
Hittites and their Sun-Cult, and the traditional home of St. George
and his Red Cross.

"It is noteworthy that the traditional place to which the infant
Christ was carried in the flight to Egypt was the great temple of
the Sun at Heliopolis, or 'the House of the Phoenix (21) ~~ the
resurrecting Sun-Bird of the Phoenicians and the Ancient Egyptians,
to the north of Cairo (Herodotus II-73). And there, to the present
day, is 'the Virgin's Tree' and 'the Virgin's Well,' where, by the
tradition of the Copts, one of the oldest sects of the early
Christians, the Virgin and Child with Joseph rested in Egypt. (The
ancient Sycamore(22) is about 250 years old, and replaced a former
old sacred tree, and was railed in by the late Empress Eugenie at
the opening of the Suez Canal. The Phoenix sun-bird was supposed to
connect Christ with the Aryan Sun-Cult.

"Racially, also, we are informed that the Virgin Mary was 'the
cousin of Elizabeth (Luke 1:36), the mother of John the Baptist,
(23)' and that Elizabeth was 'of the daughters of Aaron.' (Luke
1:15). Now 'Aaron,' latterly used as a generic term for the
priesthood in Jerusalem, is shown by leading biblical authorities to
have been 'a name extremely probably absent altogether from the
earliest document of the Hextateuch in its original form, and
apparently introduced by the editor/scribes later. This raises the
possibility that the name AHRN, as 'Aaron' is spelt in the old
Hebrew, is really derived from the name of 'ARAUNAH,' the Jebusite
king and evidently priest-king of the Sun-Temple at Jerusalem; for
the Hittite kings were usually priest-kings, and the title IBUS
or 'Jebusite,' we have seen, implied priesthood. That name, commonly
rendered 'Araunah,' is spelt in the old Hebrew variously as ARUNH,
AURNH, ARNIH, and ARNN. The statement, therefore, that Elizabeth
was 'of the daughters of Aaron,' might mean that she was a
descendant of Araunah, the Hittite, or Jebusite priest-king of
Jerusalem, and that her cousin Mary, the mother of Christ, was also
in the royal line of descent from the pre-Israelitic Aryan King of
Jerusalem.(24) Such a descent would account for the repeated
references to the Jewish fears that Christ claimed a temporal
kingship as King of the Jews (? JEBUS) in Jerusalem. (The references
to Jewish rites of circumcision, etc., in regard to Christ are not
necessarily historical but possibly additions of later Jewish
convert copyists for proselytizing purposes. They do not appear in
Mark, the earliest and most authentic of the gospels.(25) The
Davidic genealogy also, which differs widely in its two versions in
Matthew and Luke, refers only to Joseph, who is represented as not
being the father of our Lord.)

"The location of the holy family in Nazareth of 'Galilee of the
Gentiles' is also suggestive of Gentile and Hittite relationship.
Nazareth is near and almost overlooked by the mount, the scene
of 'the Sermon on the Mount,' which is still called, from its double
peak, 'the Horns of the Hittites.'(26) Gentilic Galilee was the
scene of most of Christ's preaching. Here he selected his disciples,
most of whom, besides Bartholomew, we shall find bear Aryan Gentile
names, as did John the Baptist, and his father Zacharias, the Bel-
Fire Priest."

"JOHANNITE TESTIMONIA."

Godfrey Higgins was a bit out to lunch, some might say, when he
penned this work, but it is a major contribution to the science of
comparative religion. And, there are things in this work which we
shall never find anywhere else. Higgins was an Initiate, therefore
he wrote his material for the Initiated. In the selections which
follow, we have pulled out of his work all of the pertinent
references to Johannite Theology, particularly that which
corresponds with the Templar Legend, and that which corresponds to
the theory of renewed Avatars. Higgins does go overboard in trying
to make everything Western originate in India, which is not exactly
the case. One must read the first Volume of the Present Series,
RITAT-1, in order to see where Mother India fits into the equation.

A. I ANAC: X.IV.8.

"With respect to the Oannes, several persons make two of them, and
Berosus says that there were other animals similar to Oannes, of
whom he promises to give an account in his second book. These would
most likely have been shewn to be renewed incarnations, but the book
does not now exist. Has it been purposely destroyed? I suspect the
Johns, or Oanneses, are like the Merus, the Buddhas, the
Manwantaras, the Soleimans, & c. They are renewed incarnations, and
the name was given after death, and sometimes during life, to any
person whom the priests thought proper to designate as the guardian
genius of the age."



I ANAC: X.IV. 13.

"The Baptist and the author of the Apocalypse were called John, or
Joannes, or Iwannhv. Bryant says (Vol II, p. 293), 'This name, which
we render John, I have shewn to be no other than IONA. It signifies
a dove; but means likewise an oracular person: by whom the voice of
the Most High is made known and His Will explained.' (27) That is, a
resoul or prophet. This was the Jonas sent to the Ninevites as
noticed before.

"In Berosus and other authors the being, half-man, half-fish, called
Oannes, is said to have come out of the Erythraean Sea, and to have
taught the Babylonians all kinds of useful knowledge. This is
clearly the fish Avatar of India, whether or not it be the Ioannes
or Jonas I leave to the reader. I apprehend it is the same as the
DAGUN of Pegu and the fish sign of the Zodiac. Very little is known
about it, but it exactly answers the description of an Avatar. The
extraordinary number of extraordinary circumstances detailed above
will compel my reader, I think, to believe, that the incarnation of
the fishes was once, if it be not yet, among the secret doctrines of
the Vatican. I beg those who doubt, to tell me why the fishes tied
by the tails are to be seen on the Italian monuments, of the meaning
of which none of the priests could or would give me any information.

"Jonah 'a dove' was an appellation deemed applicable to one sent on
a divine mission; and hence, among others, John the Baptist had his
name.

"Anna, or the year, was the mother of Maria or Maera, or Mara, all
of whom (as I have shewn or shall shew hereafter) were the same, and
MAIA was the first month of the year, on which, in very ancient
times, began both the year and the Cycle of IHSov or 608. There was
also a certain Anna who was supernaturally pregnant (like the wife
of Abraham, who was sometimes called maria and Isha, but commonly
Sarah or Sarai or Sara-Iswati) in her old age; and she was delivered
of a son whose name was John, Joanes, or Johna, or Jana, or Oanes.
He was born at the Midsummer solstice, exactly six months before the
son of Maria. Thus he might be said, astrologically, as Matthew
makes him say, to be decreasing when the son of Maria was
increasing. He prepared the way for the son of Maria ~~ as the
prophet said, he was the voice of one crying in the wilderness. Was
he a previous Avatar, as the learned divine Parkhurst would say,
sent as a type or a symbol?

"Jesus came to his exaltation or glory on the 25th of March, the
Vernal Equinox. At that moment his cousin John was at the Autumnal
Equinox: as Jesus ascended, John descended. The equinoxes and
solstices equally marked the births and deaths of John the Baptist,
and of Jesus. John makes the Baptist say, chapter 3, verse 30, He
must increase, but I must decrease. As Michaelis has justly
observed, this is sufficiently mystical. How can anyone doubt, that
what was admitted by the fathers was true ~~ that the Christians had
an Esoteric and an Exoteric religion?

"On the mystical nature of the name John I am not singular in my
opinion. Mr. Bryant, in another place says (ANAL. ANC. MYTH. VOL.
II., pp. 291, 293), 'The ancient and true name of the dove was, as I
have shewn, IONAH, and IONAS. It was a very sacred emblem, and seems
to have been at one time almost universally received. For, not only
the MITZRAIM, and the rest of the line of HAM, esteemed it in this
light: but it was admitted as an hieroglyphic among the Hebrews: and
the mystic dove was regarded as a symbol from the days of Noah, by
all those who were of the Church of God. The prophet who was sent
upon an embassy to the Ninevites, is styled IONAS: a title probably
bestowed upon him as a messenger of the Deity. The great Patriarch
who preached righteousness to the Antediluvians, is, by Berosus and
Abydenus, styled OAN and OANNES, which is the same as Jonah. The
author of the Apocalypse is denominated in the like manner: whom the
Greeks style Iwannhv, Joannes. And when the great forerunner of our
Saviour was to be named, his father industriously called him Iwannhv
for the same reason. (The name was imposed antecedent to his birth.)
The circumstances, with which the imposition of this name was
attended, are remarkable; and the whole process, as described by the
Evangelist, well worth our notice. Luke 1:59, etc. ~~ "And it came
to pass that on the eighth day," etc.'"



I ANAC. X.IV. 14.

"Vallancey says that IANN is the same as Baal. In Galois, JON, the
Lord, God, the First Cause. In Basque, JANNA, JON, JONA, JAIN,
JAINCOA, JAUNQOICOA, GOD AND LORD, MASTER. The Scandinavians call
the Sun John, for which it indicates that the father of the year, as
well as of the sky (heaven) and the earth. One of the inscriptions
of Grüter shows that the Trojans adored the same Star with the name
of Jona. (Jamieson's Hermes Scythicus, p. 60.) In Persian the sun is
called JAWNAH. All these names bear an obvious connexion with the
JANUS of the Etruscans, who is considered to be like the Supreme
God, and whom the Salient Poems call the God of Gods (Creuzer. Symb.
P. 507, in Ausz.) It is said once again the reconciliation of these
denominations of the Arab Janab, Majesty, power; and of the Persian
JAUAN, a chief."



D. I ANAC. X.IV. 17.

"I will here shortly notice another personage, called John, who is
very problematical, and has been the object of much inquiry, and of
whom we shall say more presently.

"Dr. Hakewell, in his ingenious "Apologie for the Power and
Providence of God," cites good authorities to shew, what cannot but
seem passing strange, that the wandering Jew was in the thirteenth
century entitled Johannes Butta Deus, which I doubt not to be a
piece of crusading erudition brought from the country of the Drusian
and Assassin Curds.(28)

"Again, 'The fable of the Wandering Jew is, that Jesus said to the
man who reviled him when on the Cross, Thou shalt remain till I
come.'

"Again, 'I may farther observe, in conclusion of this topic, that
the title Johannes Butta means the same as Presbyter Johannes
Asiaticus, a sort of hierarch, who was looked up to with singular
awe in the 12th and 13th Centuries, and who was probably the same
personage as the Senex de Montanis, whose Lieutenant was found in
Phoenicia by the leaders of the Third Crusade, and who was a Curd,
or Cordivian. When the Portuguese had visited the dominions of the
King or Negus of the Abyssines in Meroetic Aethiopia, they
pronounced that he was Presbyter Johannes, but they, as well as Mr.
Bruce, assure us that the Abyssinian Kings give themselves out for
an hybrid race of Jews, and display a long pedigree of their lineal
descent from Solomon and the Queen of Sheba: which explains the
reason why the Portuguese thought the Abyssinian kingdom was that of
Prester John or the Wandering Jew. The prophecies above-cited would
naturally lead the inquisitive to seek for two Prester Johns, the
one beyond the rivers of Egypt, and the other beyond the rivers of
Assyria.'

"Again, 'The Ionian expulsion was the same as the Iacchic Egression:
and even now, when the causes of their connexion have been long
forgotten, the name IÄCCH is identified with John, or Johan, and is
said to be a diminutive thereof, though it be of exactly the same
length.' Here we find the name John connected with, or the same as,
Bacchus, the reason of this we shall discover in a future book....

"Johannes or John was called Xrhjov Iwannhv by Julian. This Xrhjov I
believe always means the god or genius of a cycle. This Xrhjov
Iwannhv decreased as the IHS Xrhjov increased.

"This Joannes, whom Mr. Bryant identifies with the OANNES of the
Assyrians, whom the Portuguese call Presbyter and John, who was
descended from Solomon and the Queen of Sheba in Abyssinia, and whom
Mr. Maurice has declared to be the fish Avatar of India, and the God
Dagon, and who, Nimrod observes, was Johannes Butta Deus, was in
reality a renewed incarnation of Buddha; or, perhaps, rather a
superstition which took its rise from the half-understood doctrine
of the renewal of the Indian incarnations. Jesus is made to declare
that Joannes should remain till he came; that is, that, as the fish
incarnation, he would remain until the end of the six millenaries,
which, as the Equinoctial Incarnation, he would do; for the fish
would remain the equinoctial incarnation, or the emblem of it, till
the ten less avatars were all finished. This suggests a doubt
whether all the Equinoctial Avatars were not Buddhas. Of this Oannes
or John Mr. Bryant says, 'Oannes appeared En tw prwtw eniautw, (29)
for time commenced from his appearance.(30)

"We are now in the centre of the land of mysticism. Everything is a
parable, an enigma, a mystery. What can be more mystical than
Matthew's expression, that Jesus should increase and John decrease?
What can be more mystical than what we have seen respecting the
Joannes, and Butta, and Deus? What more mystical than the
expression, that John should stop till Jesus came again in his
glory? What more mystical than that the Baptist was Elias, that is,
in plain Greek, the Sun ~~ '/Hliov?

"Jonas, the amphibious, was swallowed, and returned again in three
days from the fish. He was the same person as Hercules, or as Heri-
Clo, the Saviour 608, swallowed at the same time and place with
Jonas,, who prophesied the destruction of Nineveh about the year 600
B.C. This was the time of the famous central eclipse of Thales, or
conjunction of the Sun and Moon, the time when the Oriental Messiah,
Cyrus,(31) was born, he having the solar title, and who having
established the Persian Monarchy at Babylon, restored the Jews and
abolished idolatry. He is still worshipped, under the name of Jonas,
on Mount Libanus, bu the Curds or Culdees formerly named.(32) He has
the same appellation, according to Mr. Bryant, as the half-man, half-
fish, or amphibious being called OANNES, who appeared for the
instruction of mankind, etc., according to Sanchuniathon,(33) the
same as DAGON, which was the name of the fish which harboured Jonas,
or saved him, and the meaning of which is Saviour. This Oannes, or
Ioannes we find again after about 600 years, born of an aged woman,
called Anna, the name of the mother of the Italian Janus,
miraculously foretold by the prophet Zacharias, to whom his birth
was announced by an angel. He was the forerunner of Jesus Christ,
and called, as above-mentioned by the celebrated Julian, Xrhjov
Iwannhv. He was by profession a Saviour of Men by means of baptism
or immersion, like Jonas in the water. Jonas was immersed three days
in the ocean for the salvation of the Ninevites, as Jesus afterward
was buried three days for the salvation of the Jews and of mankind.
After this we find another person called IOANNES, a fisherman,
beloved by Jesus, of whom Jesus declared from the Cross that he
should not die till his return. And after this, another Ioannes, who
had revelations from God; and, at last, we have that Ioannes ordered
by Jesus to remain till his return, as Ioannes, Butta, and Deus, or
the Fish, or Oannes God Buddha.(34) ....And John the Baptist, or
Saviour of Men by means of water, was the Oannes or Avatar of
Pisces, as Buddha was of Taurus, and Cristna of Aries; or, according
to Mr. Parkhurst's doctrine, Oannes was the type of the Baptist, if
ever he appeared, and if he did not....the history must have been a
figurative representation of an avatar, foretelling the
Baptist."(35)



E. I ANAC. X.IX. 8.

"Long had I despaired of the meaning of the mysterious John,
Joannes, Jonas three days buried in a fish, the fish-avatar Vishnu,
or Oannes treading on the head of the Serpent ~~ bruising the
Serpent's head.... Janus or Jana, Iona or Columba having the same
name as Jehovah, li, and of Jove, the Yoni, the opposite of the
Linga ~~ the sect of the Jains the successors of Buddha,(36) John
the Baptist, John who should live till Jesus came again, Joannes,
Butta, Deus, the Prester Johannes, ~~ persons seemingly so difficult
to reconcile or account for ~~ when I discovered that the old
Sanscrit word for Wisdom or Gnosij was Jnana. This at once lets in a
load of light upon us, ~~ gives us a clue to all the mysterious
Johns. It is no difficult matter now, to see what was meant by John,
thought to be a second Elias, by Baptism communicating the hny, or
IUNE or Dove or Divine Wisdom (when the Fire was kindled in the
Water) to Jesus, who was also thought to be a second Elias ~~ to
Jesus the successor or (as believed by the Jews the) reincarnation
of Elias, and also of the h#m(37) MSE or Messiah Moses ~~ to Oannes
or Vish-nu treading on the Serpent's head. Hence we may see why the
Ras of Abyssinia was called not only Joannes, but also Butta and
Deus; he was at once the God, Buddha, and Wisdom. Like the LAMA, or
Lamb of Tibet, he was a renewed incarnation of Divine Wisdom. John
was the precursor or pre-possessor of Divine Wisdom;(38) the Holy
Inspiration was incarnate in him, and he transmitted it to Jesus. It
was that inspiration which Moses transmitted to the Saviour Joshua
or Jesus, the son of Nave, and which Elias transmitted to Elisha by
delivery or investiture of the Pallium, and which Mohammed left with
his cloak to Ali. John was an announcer of the Saviour, a preparer
of the way, a foreseer or fore-knower; hence he was endowed with
Wisdom, and called John.

"Georgius maintains that the Tibetan word, which he renders GNIOS in
Latin, and which means Sapientia, is the same as the Gnosij of
Greece, and Agnitio in Latin. If the Gn be written as the Hebrew
letter was corrupted in Tibet, it will be ( o, the next letter will
be y, I or Yod, and both read from Right to Left, OI the Deity of
Wisdom.(39) In the same way, the Jnana for Wisdom in the Sanscrit is
OANA. Here we have the Oanes. We must not forget that the Pushto or
Syriac is the dialect of Tibet, where IE is spelt IO.(40) The
Ganesha, God of Wisdom, of India, is Jan-Esa, Jan the Saviour. The
Indian Gnia is the object of Wisdom; Gnia in Irish is Wisdom. Gnia
is also a tree,, synonymous to Feadh or Ved, also a tree. The Gnia
is evidently Gnosis.

"It is a very striking and curious circumstance that in the time of
Banier the Christians of St. Thomas....were so clearly known to be
the descendants of the Apostle St. Thomas, that they were called the
Christians of St. John! .... They are the followers of the Xrhsov or
Jnana incarnate, first in the Twins or Tammuz, then in the Bull,
then in the Lamb, then in the Pisces or Comasene. They are the
Mandaites or Nazoureans of St. John of the East, of the coast of
Cali or Core-manda-la. They were the Nazarenes or Nasoureans of
Carmel of the Western Syria,(41) and the Christians of St. John.

"'The fanatical votaries of king Attila the Hun, the Christians of
St. Thomas in India, the Stylite Simeons, the apostate Nestorians,
and the personage called Presbyter Johannes, appear to have been
Manichaean Buddhists. The worship of the cross was coupled with that
of the sword and of fire; the fiery sword being crucifixion.'
(Nimrod Vol. II, p. 502) ... That the sects above named were
Manichaean Buddhists I have little doubt;(42) but they were also
Templars and Rossicrucians [sic] or followers of the eight-point Red
Cross, or Naazir, or Natzir-eans, or followers of the United Red
Cross and Rose of Sharon, all the same under different names(43)

"It is worthy of observation that the persons employed by Caesar
were the Chaldaeans, and that these mere fortune-tellers and
conjurers, as our priests call them, were so well informed, that
they could fix the time of the solstice to half an hour ~~ to half
past one in the morning. It is evident these Calidei, or Chaldaeans,
or Casi-deans, or Chasidim, or Mathematici, or Templars, or
Rosicrucians, or Nousareans, or Mandaites, or Iohnites, or
Essenians, or Carmelites, or Freemasons,(44) were then the best
calculators and astronomers in the world."



3. Notes pertaining to the above.

Even though Higgins is best known for his eccentric mish-mash, and
hair-brained theories, the Anacalypsis is certainly not without its
merits.

The materials we extract are not entirely crazy. In fact, they
conceal the truth. We have demonstrated that truth in this work,
plentifully.

The Johannite doctrine we have been piecing together, from several
sources, is here in Anacalypsis. And, so is the conclusion that ends
this part of the work, as well as the conclusion which finishes this
work as a whole, and is the central thesis: The GIFT.

What we see here is Higgins suggesting to his European readers that
the true Avatar was John or Dositheos, as we call him, and fits
in "Jesus Christ" so as to not completely alienate people. It is
clear that the place of "Christ" in this story is superfluous, that
the real personage of whom "Christ" was a later version, created
because people couldn't entirely blot out the memory of the genuine
article, is IOANNES, avatar of OANNES, or U-AN or ENKI. This is
entirely within reason. The system or doctrine of the Forerunner and
the Follower, is demonstrated by the worship of the Morning Star and
the Evening Star, and the Christos is the Sun. The Initiate is the
Christos, IOANNES being before and behind. All encompassing. This is
found in the cultus of Phoenicia, and in the Nusairi sect, as we
shall see later on. And, even though Thelema in its 20th Century
incarnation, that is in the form established by Crowley, came after
Higgins, we can see in the narrative presented here in the Readings,
that Liber AL vel Legis presents us with some very important
Johannite symbols, namely the Forerunner and Follower, the
Equinoxes, Divine Wisdom, etc.

And...Godfrey Higgins is said to have been a Rosicrucian.

the Borborites, and the various Catharist groups which sprang up in
Asia Minor, the Balkans, and southern Europe owe as much of their
original inspiration to the Ophites and Nusairi as they owe the
followers of Mani. Mani himself was either a Mandaean or an
Elkesaite, which was related to the Essene survivors.
