Query: Asian Stereotypes in 19th c. Britain: msg#00116culture.studies.general
I'm wondering if any work has been on how historical events shaped popular representations of Asian stereotypes in Great Britain. For example, the Indian Rebellion of 1857 seems to have contributed to the emergence of a host of new stereotypes in British popular discourse. I am specifically interested in whether there is a study (or studies) that examines a similar phenomenon vis-a-vis China, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malay (e.g., the opium wars - 1839 - 42 and 1856 - 60). Thanks in advance, DS |
