RE: Visiting the mall: msg#00084culture.studies.general
There's an excellent funny and theoretically informed video on malls in north America made by Andy Lambert as part of a very good BBC series on shopping in about 1996. It raises good questions about modernity, postmodernity, urban spaces, surveillance, pastiche, spectatorship, race etc and includes interviews with mall architects and theorists - as well as shoppers. My students love it and it's very good at generating discussion. I think it may be hard to get it from the BBC but Andy Lambert might be able to help. He can be contacted on andy.lambert@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx The series also includes a good video on department stores made by Renee Knight. Obviously they've all been there before, but this time hopefully they will visit with a new appreciation of the mall as a dedicated cultural space where , through a combination of visual, spatial, aural and aromatic media, a certain type of experience and subjectivity is created. To prepare them for this journey, I am looking for material for them to read dealing with shopping malls as a cultural experience . I have material written by cultural geographers, but was wondering if anyone can suggest additional readings. I really appreciate this list and the way it allows one to draw upon the collective knowledge and experience of the cutural studies community. This is a valuable resource. -------------------------------------- Fred Fejes PhD Professor, Department of Communication Director, University Scholars Program 240 GCS Florida Atlantic University 777 Glades RD Boca Raton FL 33431 --- You are currently subscribed to cultstud-l as: M.Nava@xxxxxxxxx To unsubscribe send a blank email to leave-cultstud-l-144941Q@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx The FAQ: http://www.cas.usf.edu/communication/rodman/cultstud/faq.html --- Incoming mail is certified Virus Free.
