Re: Visiting the mall |
Fred,
My qualitative graduate methods seminar is run through a series of
methods-based assignments that deal with the mall. It might be interesting
to get our students in touch with each other regarding their approaches and
findings. The reading for my class is heavy on method and light on
cultural analysis as I try to allow them to approach the mall first and
then read-back to others' analysis later. However, if you'd like to
contact me personally, I can send my syllabus with the various writing
assignments. I'm also going to send your email along to my students and
it's possible they could share their work with your students and vice-versa.

In the class I teach "Media, Identity and Post Modern Society" students

Obviously they've all been there before, but this time hopefully they
will visit with a new appreciation of the mall as a dedicated cultural
space where , through a combination of visual, spatial, aural and
aromatic media, a certain type of experience and subjectivity is
created.
To prepare them for this journey, I am looking for material for them to
read dealing with shopping malls as a cultural experience . I have
material written by cultural geographers, but was wondering if anyone
can suggest additional readings.
I really appreciate this list and the way it allows one to draw upon
the collective knowledge and experience of the cutural studies
community. This is a valuable resource.
