Subject: Info on Ph.D programs

Jen - I'll weigh in on my alma mater. The Media & Cultural Studies program
in the Dept. of Communication Arts at U Wisconsin Madison meets your three
criteria handily - and I think these are quite smart criteria indeed!

#2 (on TA support) is crucial to achieve #3 (supportive over competitive
grad student community), so I'd highly recommend that you consider the
question "are TAs unionized at X institution?" as a component of your
search. Obviously unionization isn't a requirement for administrative &
fiscal support, but it sure helps. I for one can say that my health
benefits as a TA at Madison were far more generous than my benefits in my
first "real job"...

The other question that's worth asking is "where have recent graduates
gotten jobs?" - looking for a program that not only produces
scholars/teachers with successful placement but that also cares about
helping their students get good jobs is key!

Good luck with the search,
-Jason
