Drugs, media: policy, policing, representations

Theme editor:

Over the last few years there has been a heightened emphasis on the media
and its relation to social policies regulating substance use/abuse.
Reportage has moved beyond the localised ?needle-in-the-sand-pit¹ variety to
address drug policy priorities and programs.

The general theme of ?policy, policing, representations¹ aims to highlight
the importance of policy in the formation of boundaries, and their
transgression, in reporting and representation of legal and illegal drugs.
We're looking for material on these areas:

? Critiques/appraisals of media reporting of alcohol & other drugs
? Drugs policy/drug use, accountability and media as moral police
? Appraisals of ethical guidelines for media reporting of alcohol & other
drugs
? Critiques of media regulations that relate to alcohol & other drugs
? The economics and effects of alcohol and cigarette product placement
? Strategies for media advocacy and health promotion
? Critiques/appraisals of media interventions by/from
health workers/organisations
? New technologies, new marketing, new regulations?

Relevant deadlines are:
Abstracts/expressions of interest: Monday, December 23th
Full papers for peer review: Friday February 28th, 2003.
The edition is scheduled for publication in August 2003.
