Subject: RE: riot grrls

I've done some work on riot grrrl that is forthcoming, not about the music so much as discourses about race, gender, and "community" that circulated in riot grrrl. I've given several talks about it, though, and I'd be happy to share these.

Kristen Schilt, a doctoral student in Sociology at UCLA has done some
really good work on Riot Grrl. I'm not sure if her articles have come
out yet, but they are as follows:

"'A Little Too Ironic': The Appropriation and Packaging of Radical
Feminism by the New Angry Women in Rock," Journal of Popular Music and
Society. Forthcoming.
"Riot Grrrl Is: Contestations over Meaning in Music Scene," The Music
Scenes Anthology, (edited by Andy Bennett and Richard Peterson).
Forthcoming.
"I'll Resist with Every Inch and Every Breath: Girls and Zine Making as
a Form of Resistance," Youth and Society: Forthcoming.

It may be worth getting in touch with her if you haven't already, she's
on this list.

Ps. Hey Kristen! Whassup?!
