John Berger's _Ways of Seeing_ is available on video tape. A bit dated, but very effective nonetheless. Students sometimes laugh about the 1960s style but the film (which is based directly on the book) does make them talk about the issues.

Allan Sekula also comes to mind. Some important essays on photography: "School is a Factory (On the Politics of Education and the Traffic in Photographs)" and "Photography Against the Grain."

I am currently teaching a class in media analysis. We are working on Marxist
analysis this week and the samples of Marxist critiques of different media I'm
using don't seem to be resonating with my students. I am hoping that you can
suggest samples of marxist analysis that are accessable to 1st and 2nd year
students without much critical background. Also, if you could suggest media
texts (films, current or easily accessible tv shows, songs, art works, etc.)
that really lend themselves to easy, yet informed, marxist analysis I would
really appreciate it. FYI, the text the class is using is Berger's _Media
Analysis Techniques_.
