Hi

In his excellent book "The Information Society" Christopher May suggests
that Fritz Machlup's "The Production and Distribution of Knowledge in the
United States" in 1962 coined the term "knowledge industries".

A reference also worth checking is Webster, F. (1995) Theories of the
Information Society. London: Routledge.

I know they're not definitive answers, but hopefully will help

Danny
