CFP: Death and Violence: Representations of Gender in the Middle East, 10/: msg#00011culture.studies.general
Please circulate widely: I am in the process of putting together a proposal for a panel presentation at the __Women's Sexualities__ Conference, to be held in Bloomington, Indiana (November 13-15, 2003). At present, we are looking for a third panelist. "Death and Violence: Representations of Gender in the Middle East." The past few years have seen a surge of interest in the fate of women in/of the Middle East, resulting in a number of documentaries, television specials, and extensive newspaper reports about what is often configured as the plight and trauma of the female, and feminised, Middle East. This panel seeks to interrogate, analyse, and complicate such representations. How might such accounts/representations be an implicit/explicit sexualised and gendered reordering of the current "war on terrorism?" How might they articulate and/or reinforce dominant paradigms of progress and barbarism, liberation and oppression, globalisation and insularity? How do such such representations further solidify and/or complicate the established dynamics of race, gender, and class privilege? The papers already in place are: "Murder in Purdah in Wichita, KS" about class and racial identity, focusing on the cooptation of middle class women into the war on terror, and "Death by Vogue," about the reformulation of the Eastern Feminine, especially the recent efforts by __Vogue__ magazine to "liberate" and empower Afghani women through a well-funded campaign to teach them make-up and hairstyling techniques.
