Congrats from here to Geri!!!
This sounds a lot like a brick clamp. The ones I used to carry would take 7
bricks each, but there was a spring mentioned and thus the Coolay may be a
bit different. I am going to take the book with me today so I can photocopy
the device renderings, and then try scanning again. Thick books are tough
on a scanner, and I just couldn't get a great first copy on my scanner.
I'll get good copies in the evil city where they can handle fat books
better. After reading the chapter last night I think I'll only scan the
first few pages of the chapter, the page with the weird names identified,
and the foot notes. The rest of the chapter goes a little too far into
temple and other forms for what most folks would probably want to read. The
chapter does refer to a derrick that was used to actually lift the clamp and
stone. These used one or two sets of bullhead block & tackle. There are a
zillion designs, but I haven't found a good picture yet. When doing
chimneys or working on staging, we used to use what is called a "Gin Wheel"
to get the bricks and blocks to the top of the staging. I can easily lay
out the design for one of them. I have built and destroyed 2 personally.

Thanks Geri,

You have found what I didn't. From the description though it is a bit
disappointing compared to what I expected from the note in the paper. I
was hoping for something having more to do with the lifting aspect,
rather than the grabbing aspect. One can't help but think its a tong
type of deal. The heavier the object the tighter they hold.

I guess we need to look at Craig's scans when he has them ready :)
