Carbon nanotubes, which are more than sufficient for a ground to
geosynchronous orbit tether, are hardly "unobtainium" these days. The
material exists now, it's just a question of improved manufacturing. And a
tether in tension is at least naturally stable, which is more than can be
said for a tower in compression.

The basic problem with your proposal, though it might be workable
technically, is that it requires the development of four separate systems,
resulting in a huge multiplication of potential failure modes. In
particular, I'm dubious about launching a chemical booster from the top of
an inflated tower. Balloons and huge rockets with a significant tendency to
explode do not mix well.

HI everyone!

First, I would agree with Charles Platt that any attempt to sign
up & offer suspension to someone who never asked for it in the
first place raises lots of problems and almost always will end
in failure.

However for those who pity this woman, or want to help her,
I would also suggest that they see if CAT and MRI scans were done
on her first of all. They should tell us whether or not she still
exists and thus whether or not any help would be worthwhile.
Just a phone call or a letter to the hospital where she's now
sustained would give an answer to this question.

Best wishes and long long life to all,

Thomas Donaldson

FEBS Lett. 2003 Oct 23;553(3):387-90
Anhydrobiosis without trehalose in bdelloid rotifers.

Eukaryotes able to withstand desiccation enter a state of
suspended animation known as anhydrobiosis, which is thought to require
accumulation of the non-reducing disaccharides trehalose (animals, fungi)
and sucrose (plants), acting as water replacement molecules and
vitrifying agents. We now show that clonal populations of bdelloid
rotifers Philodina roseola and Adineta vaga exhibit excellent desiccation
tolerance, but that trehalose and other disaccharides are absent from
carbohydrate extracts of dried animals. Furthermore, trehalose synthase
genes (tps) were not found in rotifer genomes. This first observation of
animal anhydrobiosis without trehalose challenges our current
understanding of the phenomenon and calls for a re-evaluation of existing
models.

Igor and Doug,

How might this over expression be mimicked in "wild-type humans"? Could
taking HGH approximate it? Are any of the non injectible varieties of
HGH on the market worthy?
