Before Zen teachings was spread throughout Japan, ThienTai teachings had already taught meditation to its followers. At that time, there were four monks who were very close to each other. But for the sake of improving their spirituality and to be able to concentrate fully, they promised 'not to spit a single word' for seven days.
On an early morning, their started their first day of meditation without saying any word, as the heart and the mind was united, the meditation proceeded smoothly. But when the day started to become dark, the lantern light was going to fade away, and then soon it would be pitch dark in the room.
One of them could not stand it anymore, so he said this to the friend beside him, "Please refill the lantern's oil!" "Had not we promised not to say a single word??" the friend replied. "You two are really foolish!", the third friend snapped. "Why did you all talked? I am the only one who doesnt talk!" the fourth friend  exclaimed in pride.

Often we only see the dust that clings to others' face without being able to see our own's. Do not point at others' mistakes, for we might even possess the same mistake by then.

Sebelum ajaran Zen masuk ke Jepang, ajaran Thien Thai sudah mengajarkan meditasi kepada pengikutnya. Waktu itu ada empat orang rekan sepembina yang sangat akrab sekali. Namun demi meningkatkan pembinaan mereka dan agar bisa betul-betul berkonsentrasi, mereka berjanji, 'pantang berbicara' selama tujuh hari.Di pagi hari yang cerah, hari pertama mereka mulai bermeditasi tanpa mengucapkan sepatah katapun, karena hati dan pikiran tidak kacau maka meditasi mereka pun berjalan dengan baik. Akan tetapi sampai pada malam hari, cahaya pelita mulai memudar dan kelihatan akan padam. Salah satu di antara mereka tidak tahan lagi lalu berkata kepada yang disampingnya, "Tolong isi minyak lampu!""Bukankah kita sudah berjanji tidak akan berbiacara ?" kata kawannnya. "Kalian berdua sunguh bodoh!" tukas kawan yang ketiga. "Mengapa kalian sengaja berbicara?""Hanya saya yang tidak berbicara!" kata kawan yang keempat dengan gembira.

Sering kali kita gampang melihat kotoran-kotoran yang melekat di wajah orang lain. Tapi kita sendiri tidak melihat debu-debu yang mengotori wajah kita. Kebanyakan orang selalu menunjuk kesalahan orang lain,namun mungkin saja diri sendiri juga mempunyai kesalahan yang sama.
