      Women's Conference in Baghdad for secular constitution 

      The Iraqi Organization of Women's Freedom in Iraq (OWFI) appeals to all 
women's organizations, political parties and human rights groups to support the 
movement in its conference "Women and the Constitution" to be held in Baghdad 
on 9th March.

      Houzan Mahmoud, the UK representative of OWFI, declared to Pravda.Ru that 
"This event is an important step for us. It will greatly enhance the fight to 
organize women's rights activists and organizations around demands for women's 
rights to be enshrined in law and to have an egalitarian secular constitution 
which recognizes women's rights as equal citizens in society".

      For Houzan Mahmoud, "with the 'victory' of the Iraqi United Alliance, 
composed mainly of Shiite groups, in the recent sham elections, the demand for 
the Islamisation of Iraq and any constitution will grow".

      Since the "victory" of the US armed forces, women's rights in Iraq have 
been systematically eroded, under the occupation and from the terror of Islamic 
groups. However, they are strong, they are resolute and they are trying to 
organise and fight for their rights.

      All they ask for is equality and freedom to live as equal citizens. On 
9th March they will meet in Baghdad to discuss questions of importance for 
their future as Iraqi citizens.

      Houzan Mahmoud explains that "The conference will demand a constitution 
based upon secular values, full equality between women and men, as well as the 
abolition of all discriminatory articles and laws against women. We want 
representation of women in all political, social and economic spheres".

      Houzan Mahmoud appeals for letters of solidarity and/or financial 
donations to help the cause of women's freedom in Iraq.
