"MY PRIVILEGE": Asserting that it was his prerogative to choose his officers, who were trustworthy and efficient, the Chief Minister, Manohar Parrikar, yesterday strongly defended his government's decision to appoint an Officer on Special Duty to head the department of Information. (H)

PROTESTS IN PANJIM OVER WATER CRISIS: "We want, we wantdrinking water. No water, no bills; No water, no meter rent." People from different areas, unhappy about the water supply, shouted slogans and held placards to make their point yesterday in the city. Banging on buckets, plastic pots and even hitting the pet bottles on the ground for effect, the agitators kept up a chorus for an hour-and-a-half against the PWD's failure to cater to their drinking water needs. People from Cuncolim, Velim, Navelim, Nuvem, Curca, Merces, Nerul, Candolim, Calangute, Bastora, Saligao and Tivim held the protest-cum-solidarity dharna (organised by the Goa Civic and Consumer Action Network), near Secretariat to project a series of demands including a more equitable supply by the PWD. GOVT SHOULD BEAR COST: The task force on SARS has agreed that the State government should bear the full cost of medical treatment of the victims of the deadly virus and should provide compensation to them to offset the loss caused to their livelihood. Suggestions to this effect were made by Dr Nandkumar Kamat of the Goa University, who is a member of the task force. (H)

"GOA NEEDS A BIO-TECH POLICY": Goa needs a good bio-tech policy, said Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar while addressing the issue of bio-tech industries raised during question hour by Opposition leader Pratapsing Rane. (H)

GIRL STABBED IN UTORDA: Ms Beeny Dourado, a 25-year-old teacher from Nuvem, was allegedly stabbed by a youth, believed to be her boyfriend, at Utorda yesterday evening. The youth, Mr Vinayak Naik, of Margao, then injured himself with the same weapon. Both were rushed to the GMC hospital as their condition became critical. (NT)

MAID COMMITS SUICIDE: A minor gild child reportedly employed as a maid servant, ended her life in Margao on Tuesday afternoon, on the eve of Anti-Child Labour Day. A native of Dharwad, Hasina Kallur, aged 10 years, has been working as a maid servant for a Aquem-based family for quite some time now. The deceased girl was reportedly upset on hearing the news of the death of her close relative back home two days ago, which she believed to be her father. She was found hanging to a ladder on the building terrace. (H)

ONE SERIOUSLY HURT: In a major accident that took place at the Panchayat Chowk, Old Goa, at 12.30 am, one person was seriously injured when the Hyundai Santro car he was driving rammed into a Mitsubishi Eicher truck. (GT)

LABOURER SUCCUMBS TO INJURIES: A woman labourer, who was admitted into the GMC, after she fell from a construction site in Mangeshi, succumbed to her injuries. The labourer, Ms Shantwavva, accidentally fell down while centering work was in progress. (NT)

"SEA BIRD" AHEAD OF SCHEDULE: The first phase of India's most prestigious and largest naval base (at Karwar)Sea Birdwill be operational ahead of schedule. The first phase was launched in August 1999. Breakwater work from Binga to Anjediva Island is nearing completion and another breakwater from Aligadda is underway. (GT)

ARCHBISHOP'S CALL: The Archbishop-Patriarch of Goa, Dr Raul N Gonsalves, called upon people to identify workers under constant pressures, accompany them, in their struggle for solutions, collaborate with people of goodwill who have formed organisations or movements which work for restoration of the rights of the workers?The Church celebrates the feast of St Joseph every year on May 1. It is also a day dedicated to the workers, the world over. To work and earn a living is one of the important human rights. The source of human rights is the sacredness and dignity of every person since "each person is created in the image and likeness of God," the Archbishop said in his May Day message, which dwelt on the impact of liberalisation on Goa. CSI AWARD FOR SAVIOUR OF THE WORLD HS: Saviour of the World High School, Loutoulim, was awarded the CSI Goa Chapter award for the Best IT implementation in a Goan School, while Govt. HS, Keri-Sattari, bagged the award for Best IT implementation in a Rural School, for the academic year 2002-2003. The awards were presented by Dr Bhaskar Nayak, Director of Higher Education, in Margao on 24 April. Mr Jude Miranda, Lecturer in Educational Technology, elucidated on how teachers and students in schools can update their learning by inculcating computer usage in schools. Computers can be used to teach and learn maths, history, geography and all other subjects, better and more effectively. Mr Ricky Noronha explained the aim of the annual CSI Schools Awards and how they were evaluated this year. Numerous gifts for the award winners were sponsored by Mr David Futers, UK, a member of the Goa Computers-in-Schools Project. (GoaNOW)

COCONUT ORCHARDS HIT: Leader of the Opposition Pratapsing Rane demanded immediate action from government in bringing under control the menace of mites, which has destroyed coconut production in Goa to a large extent. He said serious pest attack has affected coconut plantations of Bardez, Tiswadi, Mormugao, while about 50 per cent of coconuts are adversely affected in Salcete, he said. (GT)

MOPA BAUXITE MINE TO BE SHUT DOWN: The functioning of a Bauxite Mine in Pernem cannot be permitted as the area is in close vicinity of the proposed Mopa airport, said Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar yesterday, in reply to a question tabled by Pernem MLA Jitendra Deshprabhu. (GT)

INDEPENDENT STATUS OF UPCOMING AIRPORTS: Continuing its privatization policy, the Union cabinet yesterday decided to accord "independent status" to Greenfield airports in the country with majority private participation, barring air traffic control and security. (PTI report)

BOMB SCARE: An abandoned suitcase found on the staircase of Apna Bazaar, Vasco, created suspicion in the minds of the people about a bomb, resulting into confusion and chaos. The SDPO of Vasco, Mr Vishram Borkar, immediately sent a team of experts to ascertain the truth. The experts found certain documents, cheques and a bank passbook in the bag, belonging to Mr Mehta, Director of Sea Scan Maritime Academy. (NT)

PIETY FEAST IN DIVAR: The annual feast of Our Lady of Piety will be celebrated at the Piedade Church in Divar on May 11. To mark the occasion Divar |Cultural Syndicate will stage a Konkani tiatr "Mozo Sezari Ankvar Cazari" (by William de Cutorim) on the last day of the novenas (May 9) at 10 pm at the Azilo ground. (H)
