Traitors?

Just because Ramakant Khalap doesn't see the language issue the way you or 
me do, that doesn't make him a "traitor", does it? 

Perhaps it's time for Goans to ask:

1. What are the overt and covert issues behind the language wars?
2. Why do a significant number of Goans think of supporting
   Marathi (contrary to what is widely perceived, the bulk of 
   Marathi supporters are also Goans)?
3. Why do some of the segments who speak Konkani for much of 
   their daily work and life end up as supporters of Marathi?

In 1987, one had the opportunity of interviewing both Pundalik Naik (of 
the Konkani Porjecho Avaz) and Ramakant Khalap (a prominent leader of the 
Marathi side of the controversy). 

All that one can say is that language in Goa is still a much, much 
misunderstood issue. FN
