Warm Pacific Greetings from Aotearoa, New Zealand!

Welcome to my website, I hope you enjoy looking at the links and
resources I have provided. The purpose of this website is two-fold:
firstly, to share information and resources with people interested in
mental health, women's health, migration and mental health, research
and diversity. I extend a warm invitation to you who are interested in
any of the themes that I highlight to share the knowledge and
experiences you have. Secondly, this website serves to make you aware
of the professional services that I have to offer.

Ruth DeSouza If you are looking for a trainer that can make people
feel safe and comfortable while challenging them to revise what they
think. I am someone with a sense of humour and skills that also allow
me to dig below the surface. I can acknowledge the experiences of
other people while remaining anchored to my own skills, knowledge and
personal qualities and facilitate dialogue, avoiding polarity. By
having excellent listening skills and being able to communicate
information effectively and to consider other's frames of reference I
can help acheive results. Experience as an educator makes me attuned
to different adult learning styles and sensitive to relating to people
from diverse settings. I am confident in classroom, in-service and
remote learning settings through the use of virtual learning tools.

I am a vibrant and energetic educator in mental health and therapeutic
communication with a nursing and counselling background. This is
enhanced by my personal experience of being both a migrant to New
Zealand and a member of an ethnic minority group. With an extensive
background in mental health nursing, I am also involved in the
development of prescribing for mental health nurses. I have been a
nurse specialist in Maternal Mental Health, developing specific mental
health services for women and their families who were suffering from
peri-natal distress related to pregnancy or with an existing mental
illness requiring specialist input. My other focus is the mental
health effects of migration and settlement and how these are managed
by both the hosts (Tangata whenua and Pakeha) and the newcomer. I am
active in a range of community organisations that work to enhance the
wellbeing and settlement of migrants and refugees into New Zealand and
have been involved in advocating for supportive and inclusive national
policies.

Enjoy your visit and come back again.
