Pele Fernandes from Benaulim who plies a tourist taxi, and Chandar Bahadur Thapa, a Nepali cook, got into the rescue act, managing to save one, while their efforts in tracing Franky Rodrigues did not yield results. By 12.30 pm the body of Franky Fernandes was washed ashore. Tourism Minister Mickky Pacheco, who rushed to the spot on receipt of the tragic news, said that he would enquire why the life-guard was not present at the time of the incident. Pacheco also informed that henceforth he would post two life guards at Benaulim beach. (GT) WHISKY PEG COST WIFE'S LIFE: On 26 April when, Romasco D'Silva, a seaman from St Jose de Areal, came to Margao he met one of his colleagues and decided to have a drink. On reaching home he informed his wife Succorina (27) and other family members that he had a peg with a friend. Infuriated by husband's "confession" the wife threatened to consume poison. Romasco did not take the threat seriously. But at about 4 pm his wife started complaining of abdominal pains. Later she confessed to having consumed poison. She was immediately rushed to the Hospicio where she breathed her last while undergoing treatment. (GT) AIR INDIA SUSPENDS 15 MORE PILOTS: Toughening its stand against Indian Pilots Guild, Air India yesterday suspended 15 more pilots even as it is taking on contract five former commanders, who have valid licences and retired recently, to maintain its services. Meanwhile, Indian Airlines has stepped in to lift stranded passengers from Gulf after Air India cancelled 37 flights from the region beginning yesterday till the end of the month due to the strike by its pilots over the SARS epidemic. (PTI report in Herald) CM URGES SCRIBES: CM Manohar Parrikar yesterday urged journalists to maintain neutrality and to refrain from bias reporting and giving wrong figures. (GT) COMMUNITY COLLEGES: Tribal girls working on sari designs? Salaries for those whom our academic system thinks of as drop-outs? This and more is possible if one adopts the system of "community colleges", as an educational system, says former Loyola College, Chennai, principal Dr Xavier Alphonse. Alphonse spent much of the past weekend interacting with educationists from Goa, and sharing ideas on how the country's elitist higher educational system could reach out to the neglected. (Frederick Noronha in Herald) UTILISING THE PRE-MONSOON SHOWERS: "Rainfall in the second fortnight of April is a normal phenomenon. On an average, it rains less than a few centimeters in April. But that is a substantial amount of water in the midst of a scalding summer. But we permit it to just run off or evaporate? One centimeter of rainfall is a lot of water. An open tank with a hectare area can receive not less than a million litres of water after it rains a centimeter. Such quantity of water is sufficient to meet the needs of an urban residential colony of 400 households for 10 days. The correct, strategic planning and positioning of water harvesting or storage structures is essential to derive benefit from the pre-monsoon showers." (Nandkumar Kamat in Glimpses-NT) WATER CONSERVATION: Sateri Yuvak Mandal, a youth organisation in Mandrem dedicated to social upliftment and protection of earth's resources, has launched a drive to create awareness about use of potable water, which some unscrupulous elements waste making others go without water. (H) VELIM GRAM SABHA: Gram sabha of Velim village panchayat was held yesterday wherein steps to be taken for improvement of the village were discussed and few committees were constituted. The meeting was chaired by the village sarpanch, Mr Baptisto Fernandes. Over 150 villagers attended the gram sabha meeting and aired their grievances. (NT) KIDS PLAY ON STREETS: With urbanization catching up fast in the cultural town of Ponda, most open spaces have been converted into concrete jungles. This worries citizens, mostly parents, who see their children risking lives on road to play. The number of children playing on roads, on which vehicles ply frequently, has increased with the advent of summer holidays. (GT) TO CURB STRAY DOGS: The Indian Medical Association, Goa, has come out with the suggestion that the State government must play a pro-active role to curb the menace of the stray dogs and must not surrender to the animal activist's unreasonable demands which contravene the provisions of law.
