The reference to "old maids" is ageism, discrimination against the elderly.  It 
is also a
derogatory reference to hard-working maids.  I am not the language police, but 
I doubt anyone
would use that language if their parents or family were working for the 
airlines and were being
referred to that way.   There are many people in their 50's and 60's doing 
wonderful jobs for the
airlines, as there are many young people with "grumpy faces and harsh tones".
