decided at its first general body meeting for 2003-04 
to present a cash award of Rs.500/- (Rupees five
hundred only) and a certifcate of comendation to the
alert engine  driver Mr.S. H. PADWAL of the 19 coaches
Dadar Mangalore holiday special train of Konkan
Railway with over 323 commuters, who managed to avert
a major tragedy at 1.30 a.m. (IST)on 25.4.2003  when
his attention was drawn to a four inch gap on the rail
track. 

Sensing disater Mr Padwal immediately  brought the
train to a screeching halt resulting only in 
derailment of some rear compartments of the train  at
34 gate  Haldonwadi Mayem (Bicholim Taluka)Goa between
Tivim ( Bardez Taluka) and Karmali (Old Goa) (Tiswadi
taluka )  but none of the panic stricken commuters
were  injured.

Had it not been the presence of mind and adequate
distress management of the Mr Padwal in the wee hours 
1.42 a.m.  it could have resulted in the first tragedy
on the  KONKAN RAILWAY and a possible caualty cosuming
several lives and injuring others many of them on
summer vactions to Goa and beyond.

Ironically the passenger  fast train at speeds 160 kms
to 180 kms per hour covering the distance from Margao
to Mubai in less than 4 hours were tentatively
expected to get underway on 13th April 2003 after the
sucessful trials earlier this year and even the
prototype SKY BUS project on display at KRCL Margao
Railway Station was expected to be inaugurated
sometime this fortnight by the Prime Minister Atal
Behari Vajpayee. 

The award has been conferred on Mr Padwal so that
persons who show exemplary performance are motivated
to discharge their onerous duties keeping public
interest in mind and not be galmoured by monetary
considerations alone.

The SGPIAG will present the cash award and
commendation certificate to Mr. S H. Padwal  on 1st
May 2003 LABOUR DAY at the Margao Railway Station
Margao  at 11.30 a.m. Members of the Public desirous
of felicitating Mr Padwal may also do so on this
ocassion.
