Five compartments, including four sleeper coaches derailed as a result of a four-inch-long gap in the track at about 1.45 am. Apparently, it was the alertness and presence of mind of the train driver, SD Padwai, that saved an estimated 300 passengers from harm. The compartments were dragged for about half a kilometer before the train, traveling at speeds between 80 and 100 kmph, came to a halt. Traffic along the route was blocked for several hours. (GT) SETBACK TO FAST TRAIN? The Konkan Railway's endeavour to commence the run of its fast speed train sometime next month may receive a set back due to yesterday's accident. Although the KRCL officials brushed aside the apprehension, the incident has raised a question mark on the feasibility of tracks for running the high-speed train.
