RIBANDAR DEMANDS A VILLAGE PANCHAYAT

A meeting of Ribandar citizens held at Ribandar on Sunday 29th December 
demanded that Government take immediate steps to set up a Ribandar Village 
Panchayat. Ribandar, Manas-wado and a part of Sao Pedro is currently Ward 
18 of the Panjim Municipal Council.

The meeting was of the opinion that Ribandar has been neglected and has not 
seen any infrastructure development and that the residents were only being 
burdened with high taxes but no civic amenities.

The meeting also expressed concern that the taxes would further increase 
once Panjim Municipal Council becomes a Corporation.

The meeting formed a 10 member "Ribandar Citizen's Committee" with Mr. 
Subhash Mahambre as Convenor to co-ordinate the agitation to demand 
Panchayat status for Ribandar.

Local MLA Victoria Fernandes who was also present assured the people of 
Ribandar all her support in their demand for a Ribandar Panchayat. Santa 
Cruz Sarpanch William Gonsalves explained to the gathering the benefits the 
citizens get under a Panchayat Set­up. Adv. Aires Rodrigues said that if 
Taleigao was being reverted back as a Panchayat inview of the public 
demand, there was no reason why the Government should not accede to the 
demand of the people of Ribandar for a Village Panchayat.

It was also resolved that a delegation of Ribandar residents would soon 
call on Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar and submit a memorandum signed by 
the residents demanding a Panchayat for Ribandar.
