Addressing the gathering after launching the Goa Police Marine Force near the inter-state bus stand located under the Mandovi bridge said that police should be able to reach Old Goa within 2-3 minutes during the time of crises. Mr Parrikar also said government will strengthen this force by adding 4 more such boats in the near future and thanked the Captain of Ports for allotting a ramp to the police. Panaji will be Marine police force headquarters. The Director General of Police (DGP), Mr Gurcharan Singh Sandhu, appreciated the major role played by the DIG Goa, Mr Pradeep Srivastava in introducing the marine force as he was associated with such force in Andaman and Nicobar Islands before his posting in Goa. Mr P K Srivastava said since Goa has been gifted with a coastline of about 105 km and 250 km of inland waterways having large and deep rivers, the marine force will be very helpful. The extensive waterfront attracts a large number of ships, yachts, dhows and a variety of boats. Further a number of ferry points and convenient landing spots in the creeks and rivers besides a large number of fishing trawlers, mechanised boats, country boats, barges etc use the rivers and sea, he said. On the other hand, the modus operandi of intruders would be to move into the cover of the creeks and effect landing inside the waterways and rivers by means of fast boats etc, the source said. It was also stated that this problem could assume serious proportions with ISI moving in perpetual search of soft areas. Therfore, only the combined efforts of the Coast Guard and the police marine force may prevent such activities taking place in our waters in future. Apart from an increase in activities against terrorist, there would be other important duties for the police marine force to perform. Marine force will have two bases one in Panaji for north district while another will be at Vasco for south district. The Police Marine Force would require berthing facilities both at Panaji and Vasco. The government had approved 18 lakh under modernisation plan out of which Rs 12.5 lakh have been spent for procuring 4 boats. The police have also planned to buy 5 more boats within a period of 4-years with a crew of 42 trained hands. Mr Allen D'Sa, SDPO, Mapusa will be overall in-charge of the Marine Police force. The force on patrolling duty will be in communication with Coast Guard, Navy, port management and police wireless network. ----------------------------------- Navhind Times 17/12/02 ----------------------------------- ======================================= GOA DESC RESOURCE CENTRE Documentation + Education + Solidarity 11 Liberty Apts., Feira Alta, Mapusa, Goa 403 507 Tel: 2252660 mailto:goadesc-0VrrOzQoB60xpvK4C0GaPQ@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx website: www.goadesc.org ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Working On Issues Of Development & Democracy ======================================= WANT TO check out which mailing lists you could subscribe to?
