The Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, the organisers, made an attempt to draw the participation of Goan expats. The meet aims to "understand the NRIs/PIO (persons of Indian origin) sentiments about India, create a policy framework for a sustained and productive interaction, and acquaint the Indian people with the achievements of the Indian diaspora and their expectations from India". It also aims to create a network of the Indian diaspora across 110 countries globally, and "recognise the contribution" made by expats towards "improving India's relationship with the host countries". (NT) THREE PERSONS INJURED: Three persons including two women were injured in a road mishap involving a Maruti Zen car and a delivery pickup van near Dicarpale on Thursday. (NT) ELEPHANT CHARIOT AT FATORPA: The annual Zatrotsav of Shri Shantadurga Kunkallikarin Saunsthan at Fatorpa will be held from January 7. The six-day zatra is attended by thousands of devotees, irrespective of caste and creed from all corners of Goa and outside. On day two, the procession of the deity will be taken out on Ambari (Elephant chariot) followed by the flower chariot procession January 9. (H) ETYMOLOGY OF GOAN VILLAGES: The Vijayanagara Kannada inscription describes Goa as Kalyangude, meaning a welfare state. The queen of Goan beaches, Calangute, gets its corrupted version from Kalyangude thanks to the Portuguese. The luzitanized Arambol village name in Pernem taluka, noted for its golden beach and emerald lagoon and the famous Parashuram Yadnya ash has its origins in "Hara-Mall", where "hara" stands for Shiva and "mall" is an open meadow or field. The award comprises of a cash prize of Rs.1 lakh and a silver plaque. Dr Mashelkar, who hails from Marcela, currently is the Director-General of Council of Scientific Research.
