GOANS ACROSS THE GLOBE HAVE DIVERSE PROBLEMS: The authorities trying to map 
out the problems and needs of Goa's expat communities are facing a tough 
time in defining the problem.  So, a voluntary group based in South Goa's 
Margao town, one of the focal points of migration out of Goa, had some tips 
on what needs to be done. From unscrupulous recruitment agents, to 
harrowing experiences at the local Passport Office, the sense of 
insecurity, difficulties with their properties back home, road-blocks in 
setting up their businesses... these are just some of the many problems

NEW DELHI SEEKS TO DRAW PARTICIPATION OF GOAN NRIs: New Delhi is plans to 
host a meet of NRIs, from different parts of India from Jan 9 to 11. The 
Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry, the organisers, 
made an attempt to draw the participation of Goan expats. The meet aims to 
"understand the NRIs/PIO (persons of Indian origin) sentiments about India, 
create a policy framework for a sustained and productive interaction, and 
acquaint the Indian people with the achievements of the Indian diaspora and 
their expectations from India". It also aims to create a network of the 
Indian diaspora across 110 countries globally, and "recognise the 
contribution" made by expats towards "improving India's relationship with

GOA ON HIGH ALERT: Security arrangements for the three-day sojourn of Prime 
Minister AB Vajpayee in the State from today  (Dec 29) at Taj Exotica, 
Benaulim, have been completed. The hotel resembles a high security zone 
with Special Protection Group, along with Rapid Action Force, having taken 
their position in the starred hotel since yesterday. (WE-GT)

TRAINING FOR COMPETITIVE EXAMS: The State government and Goa University 
have proposed to conduct training classes for students preparing for the 
combined civil services examination. (H)

DIES AFTER FALLING FROM TERRACE: A man, Rudrappa Naik from Vargaum, near 
Kolhapur, who was sleeping on the Mapusa fish market terrace, fell down and 
died in the hospital. Police said the 35-year-old man was in an inebriated 
state when he fell down from the terrace at around noon on December 28. (NT)

SIOLIM RESIDENT HELD: Canacona police arrested Admond L Fernandes of Siolim 
early Saturday morning, on charges of moving suspiciously at Palolem beach. (H)

PI BANDODKAR NO MORE: PI Arun Bandodkar, 57, posted at Police Training 
School, Valpoi, expired at Goa Medical College, Bambolim, at 2.30 am 
yesterday. He was admitted to the hospital 10 days ago after he complained 
of severe pain in the neck region while exercising. (WE-GT)

MURDER ACCUSED ESCAPES: Bir Bhadur Dhame, a 33-year-old watchman, who was 
arrested in connection with the murder of Prembhadur Dhauka, escaped from 
judicial custody on Saturday. (NT)

THREE PERSONS INJURED: Three persons including two women were injured in a 
road mishap involving a Maruti Zen car and a delivery pickup van near 
Dicarpale on Thursday. According to the police, Mr Jimmy Dias, MS Sandra 
Fair and Ms Sunita Faria, who were in the Maruti Zen, sustained injuries. (NT)

CO-OP SOCIETY ROBBED: Premises of Panjim Urban Co-operative Society was 
broken into in Panjim on the night of December 27 and Rs.51,000 stolen by a 
gang of burglars. (H)

CONVERT PMC WARD: Action Committee of ward No.18 consisting 
Mansawada-Patto-Raibandar, Fonvem and St Pedro has passed a resolution 
demanding conversion of their area into a panchayat. This small ward, 
surrounded by panchayats of Chimbel, Merces and St Pedro, is totally 
neglected the Panaji Municipality, their press note says. (H)

GRAM SABHA IN CHINCHINIM: The gram sabha of Chinchinim village panchayat 
resolved that all business houses employing salesmen should issue identity 
cards and also collect a NOC from the panchayat for carrying on business

WORKSHOP ON CULTURAL HERITAGE: The Art and Culture Minister, Mr Ramrao 
Dessai, inaugurated a ten-day national workshop on "Role of Schools in 
Conservation of National and Cultural Heritage" for teachers at Saraswat 
Vidyalaya in Khorlim, Mapusa, recently. (NT)

ELEPHANT CHARIOT AT FATORPA: The annual Zatrotsav of Shri Shantadurga 
Kunkallikarin Saunsthan at Fatorpa will be held from January 7. The six-day 
zatra is attended by thousands of devotees, irrespective of caste and creed 
from all corners of Goa and outside. On day two, the procession of the 
deity will be taken out on Ambari (Elephant chariot) followed by the flower 
chariot procession January 9.  (H)

ETYMOLOGY OF GOAN VILLAGES: The Vijayanagara Kannada inscription describes 
Goa as Kalyangude, meaning a welfare state. The queen of Goan beaches, 
Calangute, gets its corrupted version from Kalyangude thanks to the 
Portuguese. The luzitanized Arambol village name in Pernem taluka, noted 
for its golden beach and emerald lagoon and the famous Parashuram Yadnya 
ash has its origins in "Hara-Mall", where "hara" stands for Shiva and 
"mall" is an open meadow or field. In Goa, we have an ancient tradition of 
describing places, areas, precincts, villages, hamlets, wards, cities and 
towns either with a suffix of mall, kai, vai, halli, pattan, pal, em, orda,

DN AWARD FOR MASHELKAR: The renowned scientist and Fellow of Royal Society, 
Dr RA Mashelkar, a Goan, will be conferred the prestigious Dadabhai Naoroji 
Memorial Award for the year 2002, for his pioneering research work in 
polymer science and engineering. The award comprises of a cash prize of 
Rs.1 lakh and a silver plaque. Dr Mashelkar, who hails from Marcela, 
currently is the Director-General of Council of Scientific Research. (NT)
