New Year is the customary time to make new resolutions. Making ones that
can be kept could be a daunting task. Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar's
2003 resolution is obviously to move to a higher gear into the last phase
of Goa's saffronisation. And all this is possible with Goa's Opposition
firmly re-resolving to stay divided and allow the BJP to achieve its
objectives without any resistance.

Manohar Parrikar may have other New Year resolutions but, if so, he must be
holding them close to his chest. It is obvious that he will use the
opportunity to give us more of the same rather than turning over a new
leaf.

I have been contemplating my possible New Year resolutions. I will
definitely resolve to make room for my friends and colleagues in the
profession to take up the cause of Public Interest Litigations. This would
give them the experience of the trials and tribulations of PILs.

When one takes up public causes there is always that notion that one is
gearing to enter politics and doing the groundwork for elections. With no
such ambition in mind I feel it would be a good New Year's resolution to
allow others to battle social causes while I concentrate on my professional
tussles involving legal wars.

Politicians thrive on attendances at baptisms, birthdays, weddings,
various anniversaries and funerals. But with so many friends, in spite of
being in the legal profession it is just impossible to attend all such
events. It would also be unfair to attend some and not others. Therefore,
one of my New Year's resolutions will be to stay away from all these solemn
occasions. It does not worry me if my last voyage is a solitary one as this
is the one occasion when I would not like to take my friends with me.

I have also resolved to fight with added vigour the legal causes of my
clients. I shall renew my resolution never to wink at the lawyer of the
opposite party.

Wearing a helmet could never be one of my New Year resolutions.
Nevertheless I would not wish to be proclaimed dead for not wearing one.
Kicking the bucket for having consumed a bucket of Kingfisher would be a
more soothing and comforting verdict in the autopsy report.
