26-27 DEC: GOACOM NEWS CLIPPINGS: msg#00268culture.region.india.goa
---------------------------------------------------------- Archives: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/goa-net/ http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Goanet2003/ ---------------------------------------------------------- December 26-27, 2002 POLITICAL REASONS KEEP NRIS OUT: According to the chairman of the Non-Resident Indian Facilitation Centre, the inability of the NRIFC to attract a significant number of NRIs of Goan origin from the existing pool of a lakh odd world-wide, is due to political reasons. Chandrakant Keni, chairman of the Centre, said at a press conference that "Some of the Goan NRIs have been told that the government has political motives behind this move of promoting the centre." Around 200 NRIs have registered for participation in the Overseas Goans Convention, which will be held at the Kala Academy in Panjim on December 29. (H) BULLET TRAIN "SHOOTS": The Konkan Railway Corporation is all set to reach yet another milestone in the history of the Indian Railways with the successful trial run of "Bullet Train", held on December 26 between Margao and Roha, covering a distance of 430 kms in less than four-and-a-half hours. The train is likely to commence its regular journey from April 2003. (GT) CORPORATION BILL FOR GUV'S NOD: The Panjim City Corporation Bill will be shortly placed before Governor of Goa Kidar Nath Sahani for his assent, said Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar on December 26. When asked about the fate of Taleigao, Parrikar replied, "If the area under the jurisdiction of PMC is declared to come under the new Corporation Act, Taleigao will get reverted into a panchayat." (GT) A DREAM COME TRUE: The long cherished dream of the Gawda, Kunbi and Velip communities in Goa has been fulfilled by the Bharatiya Janata Party with the conferring of the Schedule Tribe status on them, Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar said. (GT) SURVEY OF STRUCTURES WITHIN HTL: Acting on directives from the high court, Canacona Municipal officials began a survey of all residential houses and commercial establishments in Ward 9 of Palolem, to identify structures constructed within 200 meters of High Tide Level and which are not registered under survey record. Since 41 years of Liberation, nearly 300 constructions are expected to be identified. (H) NO OFFICIAL FUNCTION: CM Manohar Parrikar said that there will be no official function or engagement in the State for Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee during his four-day visit to Goa as he is coming here for rest. The Prime Minister will be staying at a 5-star hotel, most likely Taj Exotica in South Goa. The Chief Minister tried to play down the threat of terror attack on Israelis on the New Year eve. (H) MANDOVI HAS PARTLY SILTED: With its mouth constricted by a "tongue of sand" and its throat choked by "islands" of silt, the channel of River Mandovi, considered as Goa's lifeline, appears to have shrunk considerably in a 10-km upstream stretch from Campal. At high tide, the river looks deceptively normal but the stark reality of its shallow bed is best seen at low tide when the dry contours are visible deep in its mid-reaches. (Paul Fernandes with GT) COPS WILL ACT: The Goa police have formed squads to identify people who are "unnecessarily" staying in Goa. Chief Minister Parrikar said that the local police intelligence wing has found that some people are staying in Goa for no valid reason. The police teams will be assisted by excise and revenue officials to check for tax evasion. "They claim they are doing business, but they pay no sales tax," he stated. (H) TERROR THREAT: GOA GETS TOUGH: Security has been beefed up in the State with the government here having initiated stringent measures to identify, check and interrogate any nation who is found either moving suspiciously or unable to explain antecedents satisfactorily to police. A large number of policemen in civil attire have been posted on duty in strategic locations in Goa, mostly along the coastal belt. (GT) IRANIANS SET FREE: The group of eight Iranian nationals, who were detained by the Calangute Police on 23 December, were released after the local police failed to find evidence of any connection to terrorist groups. (GT) THIEF'S JACKPOT: After meeting with failure in his first attempt, a daring member of the ill-famed biscuit gang followed his victims to a city hotel, before drugging them and fleeing with Rs.90,000 cash from their person. Two marketing executives Manish Sukhdeva and Sunil Dutode, who had traveled from Kolhapur to Goa on a business trip, met this smooth talking man, who was traveling along with them. (H) GIRL COMMITS SUICIDE: A 16-year-old, Shalini Babu Tate, committed suicide on December 25 by hanging herself to the roof of the house by using a rope. BUNGALOW LOOTED: Burglars took advantage of one TN Mathew's absence from his bungalow, while he had left for the Christmas midnight Mass, as they succeeded in looting a booty valued at about Rs.95,500. (H) MUSIC ACT WASHED ASHORE: Dance parties, openly flouting the Madhya Pradesh Control of Music and Noise Act, continued to plague the northern coastal belt, causing sleepless nights for the citizens. While sources at police headquarters, Panaji, said that a special team has been formed to stop the parties, a show held at the Aguada helipad on Saturday continued till early hours of the morning despite heavy police presence. (GT) TOURISM: DAMOCLES SWORD: The coastal villages in Pernem across river Chapora like Morjim, Mandrem, Harmal and Kerim, have become popular destinations for tourists, both Indians and foreigners, following the commissioning of the Siolim-Chopdem bridge. What worries everyone is too many structures have been coming up all along the coast to meet the demand for accommodation to tourists. Hundreds of huts with permanent flooring of glazed tiles, besides permanent structures have been built in coconut groves facing the sea. (GT) MOPA AIRPORT IS TOP PRIORITY: While speaking after unfurling the flag to mark the 41st liberation day anniversary in Pernem, Panchayats Minister Manohar Azgaonkar asserted that while Mopa airport was on the priority list of the government, the issue of bauxite mining would be dealt with carefully. (GT) S P O R T S GOA POLICE DRUB MPT: Goa Police scored a facile 3-1 victory over lowly placed MPT SC at Tilak Maidan on December 26 while at Duler grounds, Corps of Signals maintained their winning streak as they scored a hard fought 2-0 victory over Raia SC in the GFA first division league.
