======================================================================== Goa's phone numbers change from Nov 10, 2002. Prefix old number with a 2. New numbers will be seven-digit 2XXXXXX (where XXXXXX is the old number). ======================================================================== GOACOM NEWS CLIPPINGS November 25, 2002 FIREWOOD LURES KARNATAKA LOCALS: What is the speciality of Polem border for the people of Karwar in neighbouring Karnataka? Cheap booze, petrol diesel and now it's free firewood! People from Majali-Karwar have been carrying wood from the lush green forest belt of Polem and the adjoining regions of Supanguddi and Neturlim, for their kitchen furnace in broad daylight. The wood is surprisingly transported in the presence of the personnel of the Forest department of both states of Goa and Karnataka. (H) TO PRESERVE FORESTS: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has impressed upon forest officials to undertake balanced development of forests, protecting the interests of the people within the forest area. He said that the interests of the common men in the area should be protected so that they do not adversely react to eco-development. (GT) SUICIDE OR MURDER? A nylon rope around his neck with the other end knotted to a rafter on the wall and his knees touching the cot. His body lay nowhere suspended in the air, yet he (Alex Luis of Polem in Canacona) managed to suffocate himself to death, claims his wife and the Canacona police. A case of suicide and the chapter is closed. Or so it seems. (H) OBJECTIONS TO MAPUSA FLEA MARKET: Municipal councilors, former councilors, merchants and the citizens of Mapusa have opposed the flea market, which was started in the field on the side of the Mapusa-Panaji road near the Gandhi Chowk in Mapusa with the permission of the Mapusa Municipal Council. (H) POLICE CANINES STEAL LIMELIGHT: The Indian National Kennel Club together with the Directorate of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Sciences on November 24 put together a dog extravaganza of the year at the Campal grounds. 100 contestants participated in the event?but the stars of the show were beyond doubt the police dog squad, who astonished the audience with their amazing tricks. (H) ORLIM EX-SECRETARY FACES FLAK: Orlim Gram Sabha turned into a forum to grind axe with the ex-secretary and ex-sarpanch. At the end of the meeting the very purpose of holding the Gram Sabha seemed to have been lost as no development for the village was proposed. (GT) RAIA GRAM SABHA: For the fist time in the history of the Raia village panchayat, the gram sabha meeting which was held on November 24 went for nearly four hours. (NT) CARANZALEM TEENAGER MISSING: Anil Sadre, a 13-year-old boy, was reported missing from Camrabhat, Tonca-Caranzalem on Saturday. (H) GOA MOST DEVELOPED: "We are greatly amused by the claim of the Confederation of Indian Industry that Goa is the third best performing and developed State in the country. This conclusion has been reached on the basis of the success achieved in the strength of the economy, and believe it or not, generation of employment opportunities. This is a cruel joke on the thousands if not the lakhs of young men desperately seeking jobs, will testify." (Edit in Herald) THREAT TO VILLAGES: Pickups and trucks carrying stale fish from Cutbona jetty at Velim towards Naqueri, Betul, have once again become a nuisance for two and four wheelers as well as pedestrians and this has prompted the villagers to seek the intervention of the South Goa Collector. (NT) WATERSHED MANAGEMENT: Showing a rare Midas touch, Agriculture department officials, through an effective watershed managed project, have changed the way the villagers in the remote, water-starved Barcem area of Quepem taluka think about water and its conservation. Its immediate offshoot is a perceptible change, better availability of water and increased earnings from higher yields of cashew, chilly and other crops. (GT) MOUNTING GARBAGE: The per capita garbage generation must be the highest in Goa. And yet, Goans are reluctant to accept the very existence of garbage. That is how the garbage disposal problem continues to bedevil many a municipal council and village panchayat. (Edit in GT) SCHOOL FOR AUTISTIC CHILDREN: The Chief Minister, Mr Manohar Parrikar, inaugurated Jyot, the first school for autistic children, at Margao recently. This school is parent support and parent directed aiming to train these children at the pre-school level. (NT) WHERE'S MY JOB? Nitin Kuncolienkar, the General Manger of D Link and the President of Goa Chamber of Commerce, blames the government and lack of proper infrastructure facilities in the State for the unemployment scene here. Ninety per cent of the historians and critics, who mostly depend on foreign language sources to understand Goan society and culture, do not know the wealth of the material in Konkani and Marathi and the rich vernacular folklore? If food typifies a culture, then there are not less than 3000 recipes of Goan origin. If proverbs decorate a language then there are not less than 3000 proverbs in all dialects of Konkani language. If traditional games characterize the recreational sporting spirit of any culture then Goa has more than 30 folk games." (JP Pereira in NT) TEACHING WOMEN: At the age of 72, Mangala Wagle is still strong in her resolve to make Goan women self-dependent by pushing them to take up self-employment.
