ELECTRICITY DEPT NOT BE PRIVATISED: Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has assured employees of the Electricity department that the proposed corporatisation of the department will be switched off, as no public utility services will be privatised by the State government. "In the Western Zone, Goa is the only State where the Electricity department is running into profits. Hence, there should not be any plans to privatise this department," explained Parrikar. (H)

2 KILLED IN MISHAPS: A 57-year-old pillion rider from Bangalore died on the spot when a jeep dashed against the Kinetic scooter which his brother was driving, on the national highway at Polem. Antonio Cypriano (54) from Cavelossim died in an accident at Fatrade while proceeding for the Churchill Bros-Mohun Bagan football mach on Friday evening. (H)

AT GUN-POINT: Unknown persons riding on a motor-cycle pointed a gun and snatched a mangalsutra worn by Savita Kundaikar, manning a kiosk at Four Pillars, near Panjim, on November 23. (H)

ARRESTED FOR RAPE: The Curchorem police on Saturday arrested one Pandari Naik for allegedly raping an 18-year-old girl after kidnapping her from the Curchorem market. The alleged accused confined the girl in a room at Tilamol for 5 days. (NT)

DOCTORS' BID TO CONVINCE: A team of doctors from Goa Medical College Hospital, led by Dr Silvano Sapeco, went to Chikangal-Shiroda to persuade family members of late Socorro E Vaz of the authenticity of the autopsy report. The family members were, however, not convinced and refused to take possession of the body of 14-year-old Socorro. (H)

WOMAN DIES OF SNAKE BITE: Ms Bertha D'Souza (57) from Ranoi, Moira, who was bitten by a snake near the front gate of her residence on November 22 at around 7.15 pm, succumbed to the poison later in the hospital. (NT)

LUXURY BUS SERVICE: The Transport department is contemplating issuing of licences to luxury air-conditioned buses on Panaji-Calangute, Panaji-Ponda and Mapusa-Calangute routes shortly. (WE-GT)

FENCING RAIL TRACKS: The Cortalim MLA, Mr Mathany Saldanha, has asked the Konkan Railway Corporation to construct passageways from Uttorda to Cortalim before fencing the rail tracks in tune with the commissioning of the bullet train in the State. (NT)

FISHERMEN TO OPPOSE: Traditional fishermen in the villages of Velim, Assolna, Ambelim, Chinchinim and Betul have decided to oppose tooth and nail the government's proposed move to dredge the river-bed of River Sal, saying this would case destruction of the marine life. Nearly 2,000 fishermen families are said to earn their livelihood from the natural resources of the river. (H)

BASTORA MEET: Unlike most other sham shows, to which police-public interaction is generally relegated, Bastora, which hosted an interactive session on November 23, seemed fringed on some purpose. Held at Holy Cross High School, the police-public meeting stood out for the presence of senior citizens, who attended in large numbers. The police put up a fairly professional show during the programme coordinated by social activist Roland Martins. (H)

DR TAVORA'S BOOK: "A Rainbow and a Star: Poems and Stories", a collection of poems and prose written by late Dr Tithi Tavora, was released on November 23 at the hands of Commonwealth Writer prize winner Githa Hariharan on the anniversary of Dr Tithi's 42nd birthday. (H)

PFIZER AWARD: At a colourful ceremony held in the GO Medical College recently, Dr Savio George Barreto of GMC was presented the Pfizer Scroll of Honour and the Pfizer Medallion in Medicine, for the distinction of standing first in the college in the final MBBS examination in the year 2000-2001. PILAR PAINTING EXPO: In the first 10 days of the Angelo Fonseca painting exhibition at the Pilar Seminary, an average of about 500 visitors have come to see the paintings of the legendary artist, largely people who have come to the novenas of Fr Agnelo in Pilar, says Fr Seby Mascarenhas, Rector of Pilar Seminary. The climax of the exhibition will be a symposium on Art and Spirituality on December 6, and 12 special paintings by young Goan artists are to be unveiled. The exhibition will end on December 8. (H)

NATIONAL ARTISTS' CAMP AT CIDADE DE GOA: A camp attended by renowned artists from India including RB Bhaskaran, Yusuf Arrkal, Atchuttan Kudalier, Murali Sharan, Babu Xavier, Shamsad Hussain plus artists from GoaHanuman Kambli, Teodore Mesquita, Querozito de Souza and Rajashree Thakker--took off at the Galleria Cidade on November 20 and will last till November 26. ANTONIO E COSTA'S PAINTINGS: "I feel that Goa has the potential of having an important centre for the visual arts in this country," said the chairman of the Lalit Kala Academy, RB Bhaskaran, while inaugurating the paintings of Antonio E Costa, considered as a global Goan artist, at the Gallery Gitanjali in Panjim yesterday evening, in the presence of several Goan painters, art lovers and others. Costa is well-known for his paintings in mixed media, which form a part of permanent national collections in Canada, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Scotland, USA and India. The present show consisting of the "Bottle" series. which dwell on his experiences, feelings and interaction with people, will remain open at Gitanjali, 31 January Road, Panjim, till December 26 from 10 am to 8 pm. CENTENARIAN ERMINE FELICITATED: The Francisco Luis Gomes garden at Campal came alive with people, song and music after a very long time yesterday evening, when centenarian Donna Emirene Carvalho Fernandes of Campal was felicitated by the Panjim Municipal Council's chairman Ashok Naik, on the occasion of her 100th birthday at an impressive celebration held by the Campal Residents' Association. Donna Emirene's nine children along with their families, friends, well-wishers and local residents cheered her for crossing the grand milestone while she cut her birthday cake bedecked with 100 candles.
