TO 9.P.M. ----------------------------------------------------------------- The Goa Heritage Action Group and its festival partners Panjim Municipal Council and the Department of Tourism, Government of Goa is proud to announce the holding of the second Goa Heritage Festival on 26 -27 November 2002. This year we are holding the festival against the backdrop of the beautiful Indian Art Deco residential bungalows at Campal, Panaji in the lanes of the heritage precinct. The precinct is currently in the process of being spruced up for the festival. Trees in the precinct will be trimmed, the road where the festival is to take place is going to be redone and garbage bins will be placed at strategic intervals for the use of the visitors to the festival. The Festival Organisers are proud to announce that the homeowners in the precinct have themselves come forward to white wash compound walls and front facades for the festival. Since Mr. Derek Rebelo, one of the homeowners in Campal Heritage Precinct has offered the first floor of his house for the use of the exhibition the Goa Heritage Action Group will whitewash the façade and the interior of the hall of this particularly beautiful heritage home located in the heart of the precinct. Pandals will be erected in the Festival area as lecture halls, artisans? stalls and concert auditoriums. Banners will mark the precinct venue. At the lecture hall, academic discussions and lectures by experts in the field of environment and heritage conservation will be held. After the Inauguration Ceremony at 10 a.m. on the 26 November 2002, where Mr. Manohar Parrikar, Hon. Chief Minister of Goa will light the traditional lamp, address the gathering and launch the Group?s website, the lectures will begin at 11 a.m. with a keynote address by Dr. Ashutosh Sohoni from Mumbai. Dr. Sohoni is a noted conservation architect and will speak on Making Conservation Sustainable. This will be followed by a lecture on heritage being a showcase for tourism by noted Goan historian Dr. Pratima Kamat. Dr. Kasturi Desai will then speak on Goa?s golden heritage, the sand dunes after the lunch break. Architect Harshad Bhatia from Mumbai will then speak on the economic sense of conservation followed by a glimpse into the eco-cultural heritage of Sattari district, Goa by activist Rajendra Kerkar. To close the academic session for the day, Dr. Maria Aurora Couto will flag off the Open House Session, invite members of the audience to participate in a lively discussion on the lectures heard during the course of the day and other topics related to the problems of heritage conservation in Goa. In between every lecture there will be a break for about fifteen minutes when guests to the Festival can walk up to any of the ten stalls set up outside the lecture hall. Artisans and crafts people from Goa will demonstrate their skills in these stalls. The Festival will showcase Goan carpenters, potters, basket weavers, coppersmiths, silversmiths and a gilder who works in gold. The single food stall at the venue will offer traditional Goan dishes including main meals and snacks throughout the day. A bookstall with books on Goa will also be open right through the day at the venue. The Group is also bringing out a publication titled Parmal (Fragrance) on the occasion that will be available in the bookstall and at other points in the Festival area. The exhibition of Goan artifacts, cooking vessels and traditional utility items will be open from 10 in the morning up till 7 p.m. on both days in the first floor hall of the heritage home of Mr. Derek Rebelo. Banners will make the heritage home easy to identify. The evenings on both days will see live performances on a stage especially erected in the precinct. The first day will see the Mussel Khel from Chandor from 7 p.m. to 7.45 p.m. followed by the Francisco, Fernanda, Elaine and Anabel Colaço Group from Margao with their exquisite songs for about 30 minutes. The second half of the live performances will be folk dances from Sattari performed by the Vivekanada Kala Sadarikaran Manch.
