New numbers will be seven-digit 2XXXXXX (where XXXXXX is the old number). ======================================================================== GOACOM NEWS CLIPPINGS November 23, 2002 UNEMPLOYMENT PROBLEM: Mr AB Bardhan, the general secretary of Communist Party of India said that the Central and state BJP-led governments are boosting the "job losses" and "job insecurity" in Goa, which already suffers from acute unemployment, by planning to privatise and hand over to contract labour such concerns as Goa Shipyard, Goa Electronics, Goa Antibiotics and even Goa Electricity Department, though the latter is contributing high revenues to the state treasury. (NT) WILLY FILES PLEA: Nationalist Congress Party state president and Saligao MLA, Wilfred de Souza, has intensified his fight against the illegal construction coming up at the Jackni junction in Parra by filing an application yesterday in the Directorate of Panchayats, Panaji, seeking a stay order on the construction, which is in full swing. (GT) ARRESTED UNDER ARMS ACT: The Maina-Curtorim police on November 22 arrested the alleged accused Bouventur Rodrigues, wanted by them in connection with the case registered under the Arms Act. Earlier the police arrested Bulliver Rodrigues of Varca and Miguel Dias in connection with the case. (NT) "PARAISO" BACK IN NEWS: Bryan D'Souza, manager of Paraiso de Anjuna, was arrested after Anjuna PI Wilson D'Souza found that amplified music was being played at the restaurant at about 1.10 am without any permission from the competent authorities?.Residents said that loud music in the area is a serious problem that needs to be tackled. (GT) MILK SUPPLIERS CHALLENGE CESS: Milk Producers' Society Union from Karnataka supplying milk to the State have challenged the imposition of a 15 paise cess per litre on milk imported, and have asked that the Rs.30 lakh collected by the government be returned to them. On an average, the total quantity of milk and milk products being transported into the state for sale is in the order of 17 lakh (approx) metric tonnes per month, and the retail selling price of this is Rs.14 per litre. (H) CHARGES AGAINST LAWYER: The Disciplinary Committee of the Bar Council of Maharashtra has framed charges against an advocate for misconduct after a personal hearing. The petition was filed by Alvaro Joaquim Santana Gomes, Margao, before the Bar Council against Frazier T Rebello alleging illegal practices by him. (GT) JUVENILES ESCAPE: Three juvenilesManjunath Shankar Prasad of Merces, Bala Rajendra of Calangute and Ganesh Ashok Chawan of Mumbai--lodged in Apna Ghar at Merces, escaped from the legal custody on November 21. DUMPING ALONG MARGAO-SERAULIM ROAD: After the Eastern bypass, the Margao-Seraulim road opposite the KTC bus stand has come in handy for contractors for dumping of garbage and construction debris. (H) PORVORIM LOCALS TO CLEAN VILLAGE: The Porvorim Residents Welfare Association has organised a "Sweep the Streets Drive" on November 24. They will collect plastic and other garbage all over the plateau as well as clear the overflowing garbage containers. (H) PARRIKAR'S CLAIM REFUTED: Congress MLA Jeetendra Deshprabhu, addressing a press conference in Panjim yesterday, claimed that the report, which the chief minister has quoted from, refers to Goa as third-ranked in terms of development only in the smaller states. He also claimed that the industry was in doldrums in Goa due to the State government's lopsided policies. (H) FOREIGNER FOUND DEAD: The dead body of an unidentified foreigner was found at the Anjuna seashore around 4.30 on November 22. Aged between 25 and 30 years, the man had two tattoo marks on his bodya five-star mark on his back and "Om" sign on his right arm. (NT) STRAY CATTLE AT BAGA BEACH: Sullying Goa's reputation as a tourist destination, hordes of cows and bulls daily colonise Baga beach. And as if the irksome Lamani vendors were not enough, the cattle potter about the sunbathing foreigners nosing around for food to eat and depositing cakes of dung in the white sand. Surely, the foreigners are getting much more of nature then we promised in our tourism brochures. (Joaquim Fernandes in NT) TREASURES FROM SEA: The National Institute of Oceanography may have unlocked several secret from the depths of the ocean but a few of the rare treasures found by its scientists lie almost hidden in one of the recesses of its complex at Dona Paula. A modest collection of artifacts gathered largely during off-shore explorations in Tamil Nadu, Dwarka and in Goa has, over a period of time, grown into an unique museum, perhaps the only one of its kind in India.
