Weather inGoa???

Hi Rico Thanks for the weather update. have been reading & watching the news & got some info from people back home - heavy rain eh? * Rain fury wreaks havoc in State (GT) * Rain fury cripples life in Goa. (H) * CM asks officials to restore basic amenities on priority basis. (NT) * Water at Anjunem dam crosses danger level. (H) * Caravella, the offshore casino vessel, drifted and was grounded near the Panjim-Betim ferry wharf in inclement weather conditions late yesterday evening. GT * Six inches rainfall were reported in Goa in 24 hours. With this, Goa's seasonal total rainfall touched 84 inches.GT * In Margao, around 110 migrants inhabiting the low-lying areas near the Khareband bridge were evacuated to the Nehru stadium as a precautionary measure, with the River Sal flowing in full spate, inundating low-lying areas. * Around 700-odd mechanised trawlers, netting fish in deep sea, had to return half-way due to heavy rains and strong wind. * Fire Service personnel were on their toes attending to several calls since last evening. (H) * While Tiswadi didn't experience heavy damage, fire service officials said they had to attend to uprooting of trees. Hope all Saliganvkars are ok & weathering the weather. Are the roads still dug up because of the underground cables? In the years gone by, the heaviest rains occurred on the Feast of St. Lawrence - 10th August... Is the feast still celebrated in Sinquerim? Take care Regards Annette _________________________________________________________________ Express yourself instantly with MSN Messenger! Sad news: Shyam "Girish" Kamat

Sorry to bring in sad tidings, about the untimely death of Shyamsundar P Kamat, the son of the popular late schoolteacher/shopkeeper Purshottam "Pursho" Kamat of near the Saligao Institute, and brother of popular Dilip P Kamat, who currently runs Kamat Stores. Shyam (we sometimes called him Guirish) was my classmate in Lourdes Convent, and then in Britto's. He worked at the Kadamba's in Porvorim, and was a nice guy always with a smile on his face. Shyam was 44. He was son of late Purshottam and Vimlabai, and his brothers are Ashok (retired vice-principal of Dempo College of Commerce and Economics, Panjim), Dilip P Kamat of Kamat Stores, Nandu (Nandkumar) of MRF, Shridhar (teacher at Progress Higher Secondary at Sanquelim), and Mahesh, a former President's Scout and ex-Zuari's. Shyam died a few days ago. May the family have courage to bear with the untimely death. -- Frederick Noronha Journalist http://fn.goa-india.org E: fred-po9UeBtN8jQm4/wLoHy/Wg@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx or fredericknoronha-Re5JQEeQqe8AvxtiuMwx3w@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx P: +91-832-2409490 M: +91-9970157402 Yahoo: fredericknoronha Skype: fredericknoronha GTalk: fredericknoronha 784, Sonarbhat, Near Lourdes Convent, Saligao 403511 Goa India _______________________________________________ Saligao 403511 website http://saligao.goa-india.org Saligaonet mailing list Saligaonet-jtr8sZgGsQ4dnm+yROfE0A@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx http://lists.goacom.org/mailman/listinfo/saligaonet

Dear Saligaonettekars, One of the regular features at anOTHERgoa will be *anOTHERviewpoint*. ÂThis time we carry an interestingly new political analysis of the latest 'tamasha' in Goa. It is titled: Tyranny Of the Representatives "In Goa, the political economy of land is distorting the institutions and practices of democracy..." says the author, Delhi based Prof. Peter Ronald deSouza.  While in Goa, many knew him simply as Peter Ronnie when he taught at Goa University till a few years ago. ÂHe always was a good political analyst, in touch with grassroots democracy in Goa. Check out his viewpoint @ Âhttp://www.anothergoa.blogspot.com But before that, read a little more about this gentle Goan who has made a name for himself in political academia: Peter Ronald deSouza is Visiting Senior Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies. He is Co-director of the Lokniti programme and is currently coordinating the State of Democracy in South Asia (SDSA) project. He is working on two components of the SDSA project: the Case studies and the Dialogues. Professor deSouza taught in the Political Science Department at Goa University for 16 years. He was head of the Department from 1996 to 2002. He was a member of the International Political Science Association's Research Committees on Political Philosophy andCheck it out @ Âhttp://www.anothergoa.blogspot.com Political Sociology and was a member to the University Grants Commission's expert panel in political science from 1997 to 2000. Professor deSouza was awarded the British Council Visitorship to the U.K. where he made presentations at LSE, SOAS, Warwick and Sussex University in 1992. In March 2000 he was a Visiting Professor at Birkbeck College, London University, and in May 2001 he was a Visiting scholar at the Taubman Centre, KennedyProfessor Peter Ronald deSouza is a Senior Fellow the Centre for the Study of Developing Societies (CSDS) in Delhi School of Government, Harvard University. He is a member of the Editorial Committee for Indian Council for Social Science Research Survey on trends in Political Science and on the of Indian Journal of Social Science Review. He was part of the team that did a review of Social Science Research Capacity in South Asia for the Social Science Research Council, New York. Professor deSouza has worked as a consultant to the World Bank on Rural Decentralisation, to the Ford Foundation on Local government in India, and to the International Institute of Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International-IDEA) in preparing their handbook on Democracy Assessment.
