plenty issues - 'vaus"... no civic sense: msg#00023culture.region.india.goa.saligao
Hi SaligaoNetters, SALIGAO, May 14: Saligao Civic and Consumers Forum is struggling to get volunteers and energies >to keep it going, but it obviously has tonnes of issues to take up. Quite an uphill struggle, but they are getting things done albeit slowly & steadily - govt. machinery grinds slowly as one knows & I know that members of the Forum spend a lot of time running around.... some of the issues wouldnt be such if we each did our part, thereby helping them....unfortunately, most of us dont have any civic sense. "Our 'vaus' (drains) are filled with rubbish," complained Nicholas Sequeira, while stressing the need >for greater village participation to make the collaborative endeavour work. Youth raised concern about the growth in plastics in parts of the village, including around parts of >Donvaddo. It was felt that local panch members be called upon to work towards a solution to this issue. Huh! nothing new! It is very difficult to deal with people who have no civic sense at all & no sense of duty but they do exercise their rights. Instead of burning their own rubbish in their backyards, they kept dumping it in the 'vauv' outside our back gate, & they kept using the area a few feet further as an 'openair toilet'. Our home people got the representative from the panchayat to take action (as usual this took a lot of time, energy, phone calls & choice words) but the problem was solved for us at least. If each looked after his own rubbish including plastic bags, the problem of rubbish in the vauvs wouldnt arise. And the suggestion of marking a neutral ground for collection of garbage or whatever is a step in the right direction, but then again, who will teach the people the rest? - old habits die hard! The vauvs are easily accessible! On a happier note, hope you all enjoyed the Feast & the Foxes Nite! Have a nice day & a good week!
