Computers... in Saligao

Most on this list would not be young enough to know Derek Cordeiro, who
is twenty-something and a student of the Government Polytech at Altinho,
Panjim. Derek is also the son of Barsen and Clara Cordeiro or Arrarim.

Over the years, Derek has grown into a very knowledgeable person when it
comes to computing. The credit for getting him started should go to
Mario Mascarenhas, who egged him on to try out the Free Software option,
because this offers a whole lot of tools-for-study at very affordably
(or free and freely-copyable) rates.

Today, Derek is among the top-five most knowledgeable persons in the
India Linux Users' Group (Goa), and has been offering a lot of support
in keeping our computers running. He joins other youngsters in the
village such as Ashley Delaney and Mark/David (who live alongside
Lourdes Convent, and whose mum teaches at St Mary's Mapusa). But Derek's
specialisation is more in the field of software.

Seeing the way these young people have picked up a useful skill, I would
like to help in mentoring more youngsters to learn computing. I'm not
technically qualified myself, but do come across a whole lot of books,
CDs, software (all legal and copyable, from the Free Software world)
which can be a useful resource.

If anyone would like to pick up some useful skills, just put these young
people in touch, and maybe those who are ahead in the field can help
them. Derek has already expressed his willingness to do so. We really
need to build skills in the village, and take things forward. FN
