To Burqa with my Father
by RANDA ABDEL-FATTAH
“As soon as we arrived we were overwhelmed to find that here a person’s roots were all that counted. From the hotel concierge in Jerusalem, to the people that sat beside us in the buses we rode, everybody here understood that there is dignity in being able to claim heritage; in being able to derive identity from an olive tree, a rocky hill, a winding mountain road.”  RANDA ABDEL-FATTAH travels to the Palestinian village her father was forced to leave 35 years ago.

Friendly Fire
by MARNI CORDELL
Douglas Wood is not the first Australian to be kidnapped by insurgents in Iraq — and escape. SBS Journalist John Martinkus was outside the Australian Embassy in Baghdad last year when he was taken at gunpoint by Sunni militants and held for 20 hours. LONESOME HOME

But after six years abroad, will the Melbourne singer-songwriter’s lo-fi country arrangements and classic American musical sensibilities manage to have the same impact in his hometown?
