Bush Meets With CAFTA Leaders
Bush Attends Summit Of The Americas In Argentina
The two-day Summit of the Americas got underway Friday in Argentina
with the leader of the hemisphere's biggest country confronting critics.
President Bush and most of the 33 other leaders have agreed to
concentrate on jobs and reducing poverty, but free trade and U.S. war
policy are getting most of the attention from tens of thousands of
protesters.
Summit participant Hugo Chavez of Venezuela addressed an anti-U.S.
rally Friday.
He's become something of a thorn in the side for Washington, claiming
Mr. Bush and U.S. corporations want to exploit Latin America's poor.
Chavez joked Thursday that he might try to sneak up behind the
President and shout, "boo."
Mr. Bush contends that breaking down trade barriers all the way from
Alaska to the tip of South America would mean jobs and money for Latin
America.
Mr. Bush started off the day meeting with Central American leaders who
signed the recently passed Central American Free Trade Accord.
Later, Mr. Bush made a brief media appearance Friday morning with
Argentine President Nestor Kirchner and talked about the values shared
by the two countries.
“Argentina and US have a lot in common,” Mr. Bush said.
“We both believe in free world, both believe in minority rights,
believe in free press, both believe in free religion. We both
understand that institutions are important for the betterment of the
people,” he said.
