For the first half of my life, most of my solo camping was done in winter. It
was a really big deal around 1970 to find and buy a good down sleeping bag. I
got mine at Eddie Bauer.....way before they went yuppie ;-) It was good to
way below zero, weighed a "ton" and cost something like $300.....a fortune
back then!!!
I have many fond memories of snowstorms, deep snow, melting snow, jumping off
foot thick ice to go swimming, the campfire melting 4 feet down to ground
level, etc.
I keep wondering what sort of weather you folks are talking about when you
say "winter". Tonight it's supposed to be 5 below zero. That cold? Colder?

I just read in the Sunday paper about an avalanche at Tuckerman's Ravine, NH
killing a couple of people. One of the survivors is from Barre, one of the
next couple of towns over from where I live. They were being STUPID. They had
helped rescue folks a couple of days before and knew the danger. I guess they
deserve Darwin Awards.

What is most interesting about the 2 accidents is none of the 11 people
involved had any avalanche gear, but they were skilled in the sport of
climbing. Some had almost 20 years of experience, but in all those winters
never took the time to learn more about SNOW!.

Re: Digest Number 3328
I tried that already. They didn't know straight up from sick 'em. There are
all sorts of brand names out there in ready made products but knowing which
is best and then finding a supplier is apparently not easy.

Re: Digest Number 3329
Military White Bunny boots will do it, but you are talking 4 or 5 lbs
each.
But you say you are standing around so that shouldn't matter.
Otherwise there are a whole slew of general things that help and as a
whole
may do the trick.
More insulation in your boots
Insulated overboots.
Keeping well hydrated
Over insulate the legs and the rest of you for that matter.
Keep wiggling your toes and swinging your legs.
Occasionally do some sprints to stay plenty warm
Drink a small amount of alcohol assuming you are plenty warm everywhere
else.
Have hot drinks on hand.
Stand on a small square of closed cell foam.
Eat plenty
crawl in your sleeping bag.
