RE: Re: Denatured alcohol: msg#01362culture.backpacking.light
Everclear would work. It's 95% pure ethyl alcohol. Lots of good BTUs in that, but at $20 a bottle would be very expensive. The next best fuel is denatured alcohol. It is sold at Wal-Mart and hardware stores under various brand napes like SLX and Zip Strip in 32oz cans. It is with the paint thinners and other solvents. It's marked as shellac thinner and marine stove fuel. This fuel is a mixture of 20% ethyl alcohol and 80% methyl alcohol. After that is fuel line de-icer. There are a few types out there. Some are isopropyl alcohol (don't use this) usually marked as iso something. The other type is pure methyl alcohol, the common one is a yellow bottle brand named HEET. Ethyl alcohol has 12,500 BTUs per pound, methyl alcohol has 10,200 BTUs per pound.
