Re: Denatured alcohol: msg#01349culture.backpacking.light
Denatured alcohol is primarily ethanol distilled from plant sources (usually corn and soybean byproducts). Manufacturers add methanol (aka wood alcohol) to make it unfit for drinking. Ethanol is the alcohol type found in alcoholic drinks, methanol is poisonous. Denatured alcohol is commercially marketed in paint and hardware stores as a solvent for some paints and varnishes. Either ethanol, methanol, or a mixture of the two, all work well in alcohol stoves.
