Yeah, i was raised in VT and spent most weekends on the Long Trail.  It's a 
beautiful hike, a bit crowded in the summer but spring should be fine.  
Shelters are regularly within a fairly easy day's travel.  Best resource is the 
Long Trail guidebook from www.greenmountainclub.org.  Magickfingers
